A 16-year-old boy becomes tsar...!
On June 21, 1613, the 16-year-old Grand Duke Mikhail Fedorovich Romanov was crowned tsar as Mikhail I.
This finally marks the end of the “Smuta”, the “Time of Troubles”, which followed the death of Tsar Ivan IV (“the Terrible”, March 28, 1584)...
... ruled Russia for almost 30 years and during which a number of "tsars" and pretenders to the throne fought each other...:
During the "Smuta" more than a third of the country's population perished and large parts of Russia were lost to Poland and Sweden...:
The boyars are thoroughly fed up with the prevailing lawlessness - anything is better than the "Smuta" - and so they decide to elect the 16-year-old tsar, thinking that they have chosen a weak tsar and thus secured their own power...:
The boyars have miscalculated! Because from now on a tsar will no longer be elected...
Mikhail I will reign for 32 years…
...establish the dynastic and autocratic principle and become the first tsar of the Romanov dynasty, which will rule Russia unchallenged for over 300 years (until the March Revolution of 1917).
In 1913 the 300th anniversary of the Romanovs will be celebrated with all pomp - the commemorative coin issued especially for this purpose shows the first and (as he could not have known then) last Romanov tsar...:
The following gives a good indication of how the Russian tsars saw themselves...:
When there was a census in Russia in 1897, Tsar Nikolai II also had to fill out the document.
In the "Profession" section he wrote: "Ruler of the Russian earth"...
