His Last Song...

On the evening of June 26, 1977, Elvis Presley performed in front of an audience of 18,000 at the Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, Indiana.

He starts the concert with one of his latest hit songs "C. C. Rider"...:

Elvis seems to be in an exceptionally good mood and - despite his unmistakable excess weight - to be in top shape.

At some point during the performance - he has just finished the penultimate song "Hound Dog" from 1956 - he says to the audience: "My Daddy is here!" and asks his father Vernon Presley on stage, who is then frenetically celebrated by the audience.

With thanks to the audience and the words "We couldn't ask for a better audience. . . if you want us back... " Elvis starts to sing "Can't Help Falling In Love "...:

Here is the original excerpt from the concert, unfortunately in very poor quality ...:

Then he leaves the stage.

It is the last song Elvis ever sang in public - on August 16, 1977, at the age of only 42, Elvis died at his residence "Graceland"...

... of polypragmasia, i.e. taking too many different drugs at the same time, through sudden cardiac death ...

I still enjoy hearing his stuff! This was the first song that I sended to my beloved Tanja, for it's expressed my emotions so exactely...:

I too remember the announcement on the news. Was never a big fan but he was an icon nonetheless.

ETA. I have an Aunt who has a black velvet painting of Elvis in that suit. It's really horrible.

Some of his stuff still makes me turn the volume up - the original "Burnin' Love" and "Suspicious Minds" to name two. He made a lot of folk happy in his time. His music still does.

First record I ever bought was Elvis' "Return to sender" in 1962.

Died too young but I can't imagine a 70 year old Elvis.

Yes, me neither - but there are plenty of old crocks still gigging around the world, a few still reasonable, most plain pathetic. Maybe Elvis dying young(ish) was a good thing as he'll always be remembered as being spectacular on stage.

Elvis was a true showman, taken in his prime. Although I’m not an avid fan of his music, I do like “Suspicious Minds” & “In The Ghetto” - both tracks make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!
