France Robs a Paradise ...

On June 29, 1880, the King of Tahiti, Pomaré V,

... addresses the following edict to his subjects:

“Tahitians!

I do you to know that, in agreement with the Commissary of the Republic and the District Chiefs, I have declared Tahiti and its dependencies to be united with France. I wanted to give a token of gratitude and trust to the nation that has protected us for almost forty years.

From now on, our archipelago and its dependencies will only form one and the same country with France. I have transferred my rights to France; I have reserved yours, that is, all guarantees for property and freedom that you enjoyed under the Protectorate, and I have even asked for new guarantees that will further your happiness and well-being.

I am convinced that our resolve will be greeted with joy by all who love Tahiti and sincerely want progress. We were all French by disposition, now we are actually so too.

Long live France! Long live Tahiti! "

Except for the king, all important tribal chiefs have signed the decree.

With the stroke of a pen, the South Seas paradise of Tahiti has become French national territory.

France only pays a ridiculous price for this!

An annual pension or - as it was said at the time - "civil list" of 60,000 francs annually to the king, which had previously been raised by his subjects from taxes.

Then all the French had to do was add their tricolor flag to the flag of the Kingdom of Tahiti ...

... then the matter was legal by the standards of the time!

A governor appointed by Paris, Vice Admiral Frédéric Jean Dorlodot des Essarts, now has the say ...

... who as governor already rules the rest of (surrounding) "French Polynesia" ...

... that France stole itself together in a similar way!

Modern warships with modern cannons were just very convincing "arguments" at the time ...

... and still are today ...:

Like all these colonial land grab stories, the matter has a sad and tragic background:

Pomaré V. was heavily addicted to alcohol since his youth, he lived almost exclusively on French champagne!

By the time he had the said decree drawn up, he had literally drunk himself out of his mind, was on the verge of insanity and was therefore easy to manipulate by the French, who supplied him - free to his home - with tons of his favorite drink.

The "civil list" for the heavy alcoholic was only due once, because a year after he practically gave his kingdom away to the French, Pomaré V. died of organ failure (cirrhosis of the liver).

Since he died with no offspring (his underage wife Joanna Marau Taaroa a Tepau Salmon ...

... had already left him after their wedding night when she discovered that she had married a drunkard!), the royal dignity in Tahiti was extinguished, and France is enjoying its robbery with the main town of Papeete ...

... up to this day ...:

The stolen Kingdom of Tahiti is now part of "French Polynesia", mainly known in this country for the nuclear weapons tests that France carried out on the Mururoa Atoll, whereby the atoll was not only stolen for centuries but also practically destroyed ...

At that time the global map was mostly either pink or blue. The word "commonwealth" always makes me smile - wealth, yes, oodles of it, but common - nope:(
