A Killer Becomes A Hero!

On June 8, 1960, the Mexican citizen Ramon Mercader…

...is at the Moscow Kremlin by the then KGB boss Aleksandr Schelepin...

… is awarded with the golden star and the title of “Hero of the Soviet Union”...:

Mercader is one of only 21 non-Soviet citizens to receive this award.

What heroic deed did he commit...?

Ramón Marcader, born in 1913...

... is the man who, on behalf of the NKVD, killed Stalin's famous opponent Lev Trotsky on August 20, 1940...

... in whose house in exile in Mexico murdered with an ice pick!

In the subsequent fight with Trotsky's bodyguards, Mercader is injured in the head..:

When questioned after his arrest...

...Mercader poses as "Jacques Mornard". However, this false identity bursts like a soap bubble when the real Jacques Mornard, a completely clean man, addresses the public.

Mercader is found guilty of murder - without his real name being known in Mexico - and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Since he shows no remorse, he must serve the sentence in full.

Immediately after the murder in 1940, Stalin proclaimed Mercader a "Hero of the Soviet Union" and signed him - in absentia, of course! – with the Order of Lenin.

It wasn't until August 1953 that Mercader's true identity was revealed after a comparison of his fingerprints.

After serving his sentence, Marcader was released from the Palacio de Lecumberri prison on May 6, 1960…

...released in Mexico City.

The Czech embassy provides him with a false passport in the name of "Jacques Vendendreschd", with which Mercader first travels to Cuba and is welcomed by the Castro government (which of course knows his true identity!).

From there, Mercader travels to Moscow via Prague, where he is named “Hero of the Soviet Union”. Of course, he also receives the Order of Lenin promised by Stalin...

There are rumors that Mercader lived in East Germany under a false name, but this has not been confirmed.

What is certain is that Marcader died of cancer on October 18, 1978 in Havana - he had spent his last years in Cuba.

At the request of his widow, Mercader was buried in the Kunzew Cemetery in Moscow - again - he remained true to his penchant for false identities to the end - under the alias "Ramon Ivanovich Lopèz"...:

I shall return to the murder of Trotsky in connection with these anniversaries...
