Not being a history guy . Tried to find some real history and didn't have a lot of luck. Can anyone tell me when these people were around ? And what they did ? just curious .
 
That's a big subject! They were around from about the 9th-19th centuries. They were slave-soldiers in the Muslim caliphates, captured pagans that converted to Islam. They founded many dynasties of their own, notably in Egypt and Syria and were considered a military elite. Just type Mameluke into Wikipedia and you'll get a good overview.
 
I think, he means the Verlinden bust in 200mm ( 1500 is almos the end of Mamluk Sultana in Egypt 1517 )
