I spent the weekend completing this box art for Ulrich Puchala's kit of Karl von Fasbender. What at first might appear as a simple subject without much color soon shows it can be an interesting subject for the painter. The fun little details were the shako crest with it's enameled Bavarian crest and the challenge of realistically representing the glasses hanging at the front of his uniform.

I really enjoyed this kit and plan to paint many more from this wonderful line of busts. Thanks for the opportunity Ulrich! Now on to Zeppelin!

Hi Jim ,

Thanks for posting thi sand what a great paintjob , love the uniform colours (what mixes did you use) ...the helmet is realy well done especially the enamelling ....the glasses are one of the best I have seen ..can you share your method for these as well .

Like the way you have done the awards and the Bavarian Collar lace.

Like you say a bust that seems to have no colour but what will turn into a very interesting subject as its painted.

Looking forward already to Zepplin

Thanks guys.

Kevin, the glasses are actually quite simple. Shadow on top, highlight on bottom, both slightly darker than the material they are over, and two or three little pure white catchlights. Also note curvature of shadow transition. If you try it you will see how easy it is. Took me two minutes.
