Review King Mithridates (Part 2) from RP Models 120mm

Following on from my look at the other 2 sets available in this diorama release which you can look at here:

I will look at #2 which depicts a downed cavalryman trapped under the horse after the enemy has hit it with the pilium

Scale: 120mm

Material: Resin

No of parts: 28 plus insert

Sculpted using 3D

Casting: YS Castings

Parts in this are all held in 4 clear bags a total of 26 plus 2 base pieces in the box itself separately

As with all of the RP releases there is also a fact sheet included which is signed and numbered by Hugo himself



Prep

Again as with previous reviews in the series prep is minimal , casting overall very good indeed , I will highlight any prep as we go through the many pieces

Lets begin with the body of the actual horse

Prep includes slight flashing on the undeneath of the armour and a casting post to remove ...be careful , use a dremel but slowly , on the underside there's a casting line to sand away ( although the area wont show when in position on base

The body of the horse is cut at the neck and rear quarters of the animal , very accurate fitment points are provided

There is a wound in the horse's lower rear underside ...so don't fill it in !!!

On the underside we have rectangle of resin this fits well into the base cutout

Casting this piece must have been difficult so credit to YS for achieving the details on the horse armour and the pointed edging on the horse cloth

Cast direct to the horse is the lower torso of the rider , very cleverly done , the right leg in position with the left having a location area the torso is cut at the waist with the usual good fitment point

Muscle structure is shown on the cast on right leg and also the undergarment he wears

The lower torso is well cast showing all the individual elements of his protective clothing

On now to the remainder of the Horse itself

This consist of rear quarters with cast on left leg , plus 3 other legs

Prep includes removing a casting line on the left back and excess resin from upper surface and small amount from base fitment area

The muscle work is very good with a cutout to fit the tail into ...filler needed

The underside is all there including a horse shoe and the structure of the hoof



The remaining legs have fine casting lines to remove and excess resin at fitment area's all are as well muscled , fit is good with some slight filling and sanding needed

One thing to note is the accurate positioning of the limbs in relation to the action



The actual head needs casting residue sanded away on the underside running up to the ears and slight flashing by the mouth

The position of the upturned neck and features of the mouth , open exposing teeth ..in fear

The mouthpiece is nicely shaped and cast into place some might have preferred this separate , on the head we have armoured plate shaping around the eyes well

On top the head a cut out to take the crest

The mane of the animal is sculpted with movement and very full

In place filler is needed with sanding after



The tail will need a little sanding and use of filler when in position , both are well textured and with movement on both

In the picture you also see the crest for the Roman attacker



As with Part 1 there is a well detailed crest that fits easily ...slight filling needed but looks good in place



The reins are cast to shape , not too keen on this but saying that they are suitable but some might wish to use other material ie: electrical tape

Now lets look at the downed rider

This fellow consists of the upper torso well armoured , this showing well detailed individual plates on the middle , good shoulder protection , details include stitching and cords tied

The sleeves show well done protection , very well defined and cast

Needless to say prep is just a case of removing excess on the underside prior to fitting to the cast on lower and remove flashing from armour at the rear and the unwanted lines of resin

The neck is cut accurate to take the head and the arms



The head is with the distinctive styled helmet which will need sanding away of excess resin , there is shaping along the front , the cheek pieces held close to the face sides

The facial features are one of pain , teeth gritting together in the dangerous situation he finds himself in



The left leg needs the boot underside sanding to remove the excess and casting line from rear of the leg

Again the muscle work shines through leading down to the styled boots held in place by ties

Fit to the torso will need slight sanding and filler but nothing dramatic



The arms are well positioned and again sculpting of the armoured sections is well represented , there are fine casting lines to remove and tiny amount of excess at top , fitting is accurate

Particularly to note is the way the hands have been sculpted , slight sanding needed but individual digits are well done




To complete the rider he has been given a sword in scabbard which fits well into position after removing from casting formers and flashing

Now to the attacking figure

Again this is broken down , which is well thought out , the main torso is bent at the waist on the left ...again in relation to the action he carries out

Prep just consists of removing excess resin on the lower edge , this is on a textured cloth surface so a little rework will be needed

Fitment points are clean and well shaped to take the limbs with ease

Our soldier wear a mail shirt , nice touch being some slight wear and damage worked into place , natural folds and creases , around the waist a nicely styled plated belt with groin protectors in place at the front , there are cutout for the sword he will carry

Underneth we are treated to a view of his pride and joy ....within a undergarment ...phew!!!!



Head is wearing the typical helmet , again there is need to work on removing the excess resin at the back and then fit the crest which you see in the picture in a earlier post with the horses tail
The features are of a determined man ....fighting for Rome and his life on the battle field, good definition with easy access for painting



Legs/Arms

The legs are positioned to take the pressure of attacking the horse , well muscled again with really good detail work on the boots , including the strapping and the nails in the sole

Slight sanding to the fitment pieces on the feet undersides and then slight filler when in place



The arms again well muscled , with wide open short sleeved ...this shows good texture work , both wrists are cut away to take the hands

Both will need excess or casting line removed but fit is good once this is done



Hands

These are cast holding parts of the pilium that he has used against the horse , the hands are a good shaping , the larger part of the shaft has I believe a wire running through , the lethal end of the weapon fits into the wound of the horses underside ....some might wish to replace this with a wire substitute

Both will need removing from formers



Weapons

Both of these will need removing from formers , both are in scabbards and both are classic in shaping and style , some nice detail on the actual handle shaping

Fit is simple and in place I wonder did he draw to take the riders head as a trophy which was often seen



Base

This is a large base cast with thought in 2 pieces ( in order to fit into the box itself ) , fitting together easily with filler needed , its heavily rocky with a broken spear cast into the larger piece and the cutouts to take the resin well done

The smaller piece also has 2 locating cutouts



Final thoughts

A good pairing of figures , can be used both with and without the other sets , it can be purchased on its own as can the other sets,

Well thought out in build but do plan this ..the result will be a fine display

Again congratulations to YS for the casting it is as I said before complicated and they achieve the task
