Interesting piece. The armor on the horse is unique!<O</O <O</O
With that said, I see something in this piece that doesn't seem up to snuff for me. That's Danilo's painting. I for one regard him as one of the best painters around, possibly one of the best in the world. This piece just doesn't seem up to his standard. The flesh tones look flat, the dog looks like it needs more contrasts and is glossy, the yellows of the armor on the horse have virtually no shading. I don't mean this as slight to La Meridiana or Danilo in any way, but it's like we have discussed in earlier postings, with artists of this caliber you come to expect a certain standard, and for me this one doesn't live up to the high standard I have "mentally set" for Danilo. It looks a bit like he was in a hurry maybe. Don't get me wrong, it's very well painted over all (the patterns on the tunic and cape are for example are very nice), better than I could do. Just for me, it doesn't seem like it's as good as Danilo could do!<O</O <O</O
Jay,
I was thinking the same thing even before I scrolled down and read your post. The face in particular really looks "off." Of course you and I (and everyone else) know Danilo can do much better. I would guess he did knock this one out in a hurry. I'm sure he gets so many requests to paint figures for box art, etc. that he just can't put his all into each one.
Maybe it is from Danillo a few years back.......
I think (my opinion) he cannot effort this work.
Danillo is maybe one of the best at this third rock from the sun. But if he as deliver this kind of work more, he will be soon without work.
