Excellent figure. Good to see Alan sculpting for La Meridiana.
Slightly surprised to see the brown jacket, instead of the blue.
I'll assume for the moment that sources are sound (i.e. the straw "boater" hat vs. the fez cap), and the brown version was the collective choice, pending further info from the artist(s), or others more knowledgeable than I.
In any event, another great 75mm figure to be available soon!
Congrats to Alan and Danilo!!

The brown jacket is speculative (possible second pattern), but is believed to be valid; the boater is valid AFAIK. The one will look great next to the one sculpted by Carl Reid

Thanks, Matt. Not trying to start a brushfire here. Have seen "brown vs blue" conversations on various forii in the past, and if I understand correctly, consensus seems to favor blue at this time, but not all folks agree. But since no one has Polaroids (dating myself, aren't I?), the debate continues.
You are right about this and the Reid sculpt - what a visual treat!

That's pretty much my experience.

Thanks a really great sculpted figure.
And as always Danillo bring it into life........fabulous.
This is gonna find his way to the contest tables in the future.

Congrats to Alan and Danilo!!

Lovely work by Alan and Danilo as always!

Hi Don

The brown coatee as I understand it, was as a result of the poor quality uniforms and the vegetable dye's used which faded from blue to brown.

The boater is a legit piece of headwear, it was also common practice for the Tigers to paint slogans around the ribbon;
“Tiger Bound for Happy Land,” “Tiger Will Never Surrender,” “A Tiger Forever,” “Tiger in Search of a Black Republican,” or “Lincoln’s Life or a Tiger’s Death.” etc

I hope this helps a little!

Carl

Lovely figure. La Meridiana haven't released a turkey yet, and long may it continue.

First let me say that this figure is really nice and I will definitely be painting one. What follows is provided for information purposes and not criticism. The Tiger Rifles were only one company (Co. B) of the 1st Special Battalion of the LA Volunteers.

Color of the Jacket: Blue or Brown can be justified. Tiger Pvts Dennis Corcoran and Michael O’Brien were executed by firing squad after 1st Manassas and buried in Centreville, VA (They assaulted the Provost Marshall) They were re-interned a number of years ago and the remains of their uniforms were examined at that time. Remnants of the jacket revealed indigo dye was used and indigo was a high quality dye for the day. So blue is accurate, but that does not preclude the possibility that the jackets were later re-dyed, or that they did fade/oxidize to some degree or that a “second” brown jacket was issued (no evidence for this last option). A contemporary water color (1861) by Capt Leon Fremaux, 8th LA Inf does show a Tiger in a brown jacket…so analysis confirms blue (as well as descriptions) and Fremaux supports a brown version. (assuming Fremaux’s colors didn’t oxidize) Red jacket trim was also confirmed by grave remnants but tambeaus could not be confirmed.

FYI – poor blue dyes can be illustrated by some <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com
><st1:State id=vBCodeIMG alt=
</st1:State>Rhode Island</ST1:p units that were issued blue uniforms dyed with Logwood. Logwood quickly faded/oxidized to a red-brown.

</O:p
Trousers: Contemporary descriptions and illustrations (1861- Fremaux already noted and Harpers Weekly) shown full-blown “baggy” zouave trousers. That does not rule out standard cut trousers being worn by some individuals. Redwood’s Tiger drummer drawing shows trousers as on the figure but that was drawn in 1884….20 + years later. The material used was <ST1:p<st1:City w:st="on">Hamilton</st1:City> ticking. No pre-war or Civil War examples have come to light (nothing was left in the graves) but post war samples are blue and white.

The grave remnants revealed a collarless RED shirt with a Burgundy trim. Shoes were typical brogans, and leggings were white with white (shell) buttons.

<O:p</O:p
Straw hats are legit and were reported by eyewitnesses at a <st1:City w:st="on"><ST1:pNew Orleans </st1:City>racetrack as I recall. Slogans as noted before are also based on eyewitness accounts.
<O:p</O:p
Tiger Rifles were issued the 1841 <st1:State w:st="on"><ST1:pMississippi</st1:State> rifle BUT NO bayonets. I would personally get rid of the bayonet sheath and add a large side knife. (The Mississippi Rifle mounts a sword bayonet)
<O:p</O:p
Canteen was probably a tin drum style but the canteen as provided along with the backpack could be battlefield pickups.

Hope this helps

I agree with Rick's coment regarding bayonet and would also prefer a "bowie" type knife, but I would still say it gets a nine out of ten from me.

A nicely posed figure, but one observation is that there are too many folds added to what is a static pose IMO.
There is a lot of attention to detail which is what i like about this figure.

ERRATA to my previous post on the Tiger Rifles Uniform. On checking my notes the grave evidence would indicate a RED collarless shirt with BURGUNDY trim and white porcelain buttons not blue with red trim as I posted earlier.

As an extra note, in 1861 the Ladies Volunteer Aid Association of New Orleans provided 96 pairs of trousers for the unit (but I doubt they would have been of the Hamilton ticking material)

Early accounts also report blue, 5-button, standing collar fatique jackets (Blue was the state's official uniform color). With a little modification to the figure's jacket, an early version of the Tiger uniform can be turned out especially with the straw hat.

Rick, Appreciate your sharing details with us on Wheats Special Battalion. from what I have read, they were a tough bunch of fellas. I fondly recall you bringing some really nice stuff to Atlanta Show years ago. Also remember a Ron Hinote conversion of a Cherokee Rifles figure that still sits at the top of my favorites list. Good to hear you are still active in the hobby. Would love to have you come to Atlanta again!

BTW< nice work on the figue Alan! Always enjoy your work! I can't wait to paint one of these. Would love for someone to do a member of the 1st Rhode Island wearing the blanket poncho, Hardee Hat, and carrying the Burnside Carbine from early Civil War period.

Terry - Good to hear from you (y)

I've been away from painting for quite awhile due to work & events but am trying to get back to my brushes again. I left the oils behind and am now playing with acrylics so there is a definite learning curve. I always enjoyed the Atlanta Show so maybe there are a few more trips in the future.

PS. Is Howard's Trophies still around? You put me on to him and he always provided the best name plates but I haven't been able to make contact laterly.

Re: Howard Trophies

Hey Rick, Great to hear from you! Man, it has been some time since we have spoken. I still have my old Ron Hinote kit and look at it frequently in hopes of getting the inspiration to do him as a much improved Cherokee Rifle. Also still have the info and pictures you shared with me when you did yours. I certainly appreciated your time and sharing. And hope to hear from and see you again in Atlanta, GA.

Terry Howard moved to the Mountains of North Georgia a couple years ago. He lives close to Helen, GA now in a little town called Cleveland. Beautiful place. His new address follows...

Thanks Terry for the info. I'll try and get in touch with him. My email is in my user profile in case you need anything. I'll give you a heads up on my next Atlanta trip.
