Lakota Sundancer

The Sundance is the most holy ceremony in the Lakota religion. Because of this reason I hesitated a long time to do this figurine. It takes some talks with a Lakota friend, that I start to work. I started to sculpt the figurine exactly at a time when another friend participated in the Sundance.

Participating in the Sundance means that the participant scarifies his pain to the sake of the people. The Sundance takes four days. The participants are pierced on the breast with a piece of wood ore a eagle claw and tied to the Sundance tree. The participant dances until the flesh rips and the Sun dancer is free.
From 1890 to 1943, the Sundance was, like other religious ceremonies of the Indians prohibition. Today the Sundance is held in many Indian Reservations for the sake of the all the people.

Many times we have read in planet figure how the figures are “Hollywoodized” and presented to benefit the manufacture. This is also the case in the movies that Hollywood produces about the American Indian. An example would be the infamous “A Man Called Horse” where the director defames a holy ceremony “The Sun Dance” and actually shows an adaption of the Mandan Ceremony called “Oh-ke-pa”. They continue with the constant defamation of the Lakota culture………all in the name of “Hollywood”…….resulting to a major insult after insult of these great people

For the figurine I used a Preiser anatomy figurine of 54 mm

Photo 1 The basic of the figurine to get the correct pose.
Photo 2 I had reworked the upper body, which caused a lot of work to get an anatomic correct figurine.
Photo 3 the finished basic figurine.
Photo 4 I sculpted the wrap around blanket.
Photo 5 The figurine with the sculpted hairs, the sage wrath with the feathers around the head and the sage wrath around the arms and foots.
Photo 6 the recent level of worke.
Photo 7 the Sundance tree under construction.

Thanks Bruno..........you have really got a terrific scene developing here. I look forward to seeing your next steps.

This is something different and historicaly correct. I don't know much about the Native Americans, but as i read it you are well informed. So from opinion on the other side of the great ocean this is gonna be a great project.
I am looking really forward to the finish. I like it already.

Nice piece with some enjoyable background...looking forward to the next step Bruno.

Stephen..you've got a good memory, especially for these subjects...with the mention of the flesh of the chest being pierced.....I seem to remember from way back...maybe a british company doing a figure a little similar....just curious...in case I'm just imagining it..do you recall it...??...Kitney...Barton...it's a bit hazy... :)

All the best..

Roy.

Hi folks,
thank you very muche for your nice answer! I will inform you of the developement of the figurine. It will take some time, as in the summer I prefere to sculpt instead of painting. When I sculpt I can sit in the garden. For the painting I need a lamplight. I still doning some research about the body painting, which seems to have some changes during the last century.

In the meantime Guy send me photos of a 120 mm diorama of a sundancer, very nice pice. Thank you very much.

Best regards from Germany

Bruno

Hi folks,
I forgot, I'm just on the way to sculpt a 54 mm Buffalo scull for the figurine. I'll send photos soon.
