I recently purchased a figure on Ebay and, in discussion with the vendor, found out about this site. I cannot believe that I have not known of it before!!

There is such a rich level of expertise here that it is like having a free pass in a candy store for me.

My painting work is "ok" but, when compared to the more experienced hobbiest, the higher level of work (in comparison) is obvious.

More to the point for me is the Sculpting forum. I am very interested in sculpting and the work of Gary Dombrowski, Roy Hunt and Y Wong have thrilled me for the last several days of reading.

I hope to find others as well but would like to start off by saying Thank You to those who are so kind as to share there expertise with the budding amateurs like myself!

I have bounced around this hobby of miliatary figures for many years and hope that my skills will have a chance to improve with the info in this site.

Looking forward to a long life on this planet,

Kevin D.

Kevin, Thanks. planet figure is a great place to not only see some great work, but possibly learn or even teach someone a thing or two as well. So please participate if you feel inclined.~Gary

Welcome to the planet. This is my favorite site, especially the V bench pages. Another good forum is Timelines, which has good sclupting articles also.

Timelines Forum

If you are anywhere near Atlanta Georgia, there is a show in two weeks where you can meet and talk to some of these scluptors. There are several shows throughout the world all year long. You can find Atlanta show info on this web page:

Atlanta Military Figure Society

Enjoy!

Hi Kevin, and a big welcome to the Planet...If I'm stuck with something, I usually come right here and look around at all the amazing work the members have posted...that is usually all I need to get going,...if there is any help you need, this is definately the place to ask.. :)

All the best...Roy.

Ok,

Thanks for the welcome and encouragement! I took a few shots today of some past painting and some recent attempts at the human head. The pics may not be the best but I’ll work on that as I take more in the future.

If no pics show, please understand this is my first try on attachments with the planet. Gonna have to get used to the rules and limitations.

First off, how do you wipe out the background to get the effect of a blank back drop?

I'm open to any and all comments and constructive criticisms.

You may fire when ready, Griddly. ;)

Best,
Kevin D.

an attempt at a bust.... was going to be the start of a 120mm mountain man but the head kept growing with the more clay that I added to balance the proportions.

It may now become a crusader bust with chainmail hood or be put aside as an example to grow from.

To all of you who are kind enough to reply, I forgot to mention that I have a strong sense of humor and a great desire to improve, so please don't be concerned about my feelings (within reason, of course! )

Best,

Kevin D.

Hey Kevin,

Welcom to pF!

I am fairly new here too, and in the few short weeks I've been here, I have learned a great deal from the kind, very talented painters and sculptors on this site. If you cruise the vBenches, you will see some of the finest painters and sculptors in the world.

I love the kilt on your Scotsman. Kilts are tough to paint - nice job there. The faces are the toughest - at least for me. I might suggest working on the highlights and blending of your face, and lightening the contrasts. Here's a great article on painting faces that has helped me a lot:

Keep posting!

Cheers and welcome :) :)

Hey, Thanks Kyle,

I took the face painting link and placed it in my favorites. Looks good and is very clear cut! I haven't painted in a while (full interest is in sculpting right now) but this way it will be available for my next piece.

With the gap of time from painting, every hint will be good to review, let alone the face which has always been a challenge for me.

You're certainly right about the v-benches! Great info and examples!!

I popped over to your v-bench, awsome awsome castle! Many pics are no longer available but those that were very nice. I take it that medieval time are an interest of yours.

Thanks for looking at my stuff,

Kevin D.

Kevin,

Thank you for your kind comments. Yes, medieval is a favorite era for me. I also enjoy Ancients (Greek, Roman, etc.). Anything pre-gunpowder. I like the strategy and tactics of warfare when it wasn't about weapon power, but more about man power. The castle was a labor of love - took me about 60 hours!

Yeah, I meant to say: I like your start on the sculpts. Someday I hope to dive into that side of the hobby. I can't even imagine how you and others can do that - it's awesome to me. Nice job.

Also: I just attended my first figure show, and found it to be very useful and fun. If you are anywhere near Atlanta, you should try to get to the show this coming weekend. If not, there are shows all over the country. But you probably already know that, since you've been a modeller for a while. ;)

Cheers,

Kyle
