I am currently working on an 18th scene in 54mm (old Phoenix figures), that involves a fireplace. I would like to marbelize (white marbel) the fireplace surround, any suggestions on technique in acrylics would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Matthew, I think you must decide first about the pattern, looking for "marmo di carrara" will show you something, this is a link to some sample:

The technique I use is very simple. Start first with the base coat, then add some very thinned (just dirty water) and large spots using two/three different tones. Next start with veins for the classical marble (white/gray) or more little spots. Always using very thinned paint. Once done you can highlight and/or draw some more veins/spots with a more satured (not so thinned) colour.
When thinning colours, use water and a bit of glass medium. The glaze medium can help you while blending.
Veins and spots have its own logic, but it's too complicated for me, so I just try to emulate them.

Luca, thank you for the advice. I see this might be a bit more difficult than I thought, but that is why I am enjoying this project so much (yes, because it is challenging), I will have to give your technique a try. I plan to post pics when the project is finished.

Matthew - You also might experiment with some sponges. 54mm is kind of small for this technique, but still might work if you find the right sponge, and go very lightly. Sea sponges, and even the sponge material in the Pegaso kits, cut up roughly might work.

Matthew, in my article in HM of my napoleonic dio I did a few stairs in marble. Maybe you can take a look . It may help

Matthew after you complete the painting you might wanna use a satin cote ,like humbrol,to get the glazing effect of polished marble.

I planned on doing just that, but thank you for the advice.
