Ex-Tsar Nilokaj Romanow and his family are arrested!
The ink under the Tsar's certificate of abdication is not yet dry ...
... Russia already has a new Provisional Government...
... under minster president Prince Georgij Lwow...:
This allows the former Tsar Nikolai II to go to his family in the Katharinenhof Palace in Tsarskoye Sselo (today: Pushkin)...:
There the entire tsar's family (the ex-tsar, ex-empress Aleksandra, daughters Olga, Tatjana, Marija and Anastassija as well as the son Aleksej) was arrested on March 21, 1917 by order of the provisional government and interned in the palace.
Although the Romanovs suffered greatly from the restriction of their freedom of movement, this first period of imprisonment was still marked by curiosity, restraint and respect on the part of the guards - and the ex-Tsar was initially allowed to continue to wear his insignia as a Russian colonel which he is so proud to have received from his father.
The family passes the time chopping wood (here the "Citizen Romanow" with his son) ...
... as it gets warmer with gardening ...
... and patiently pose for the guards' cameras. The first picture shows the ex-tsar with guards in the background - it's pretty well known ...:
Unknown in the West, however, is the next photo that was taken immediately after the above picture - now next to Nikolai Romanov are his daughters Olga, Tatiana and Marija ...:
This picture, which shows the ex-tsar couple on one of the first warmer days of spring, is almost completely unknown in this country ...
And another - almost unknown - picture: The guards themselves are often and gladly photographed together with the fallen victim - the two daughters Olga and Tatiana Romanowa show themselves with shaved heads, a prophylaxis that was common at the time after they had just survived severe measles ...:
The almost familiar atmosphere between guards and guarded will soon change ...
