Hindenburg surrenders Germany to the Nazis ...!

The man was one of the greatest accidents the Germans have ever experienced - apart from Hitler and his Nazis:

Paul von Beneckendorff and Hindenburg - here as Reich President (and "Substitute Emperor", as he was ironic called at the time) in 1933 and already clearly senile!

He gave his name and face during the First World War ...

... as a publicly visible figurehead of the criminal war extension policy of the REAL ruler in Germany, his "Quartermaster General" Erich Ludendorff ...:

He was the face of the "Oberste Heeresleitung" (OHL), behind the facade of which Ludendorff and his lackeys in Germany established a de facto military dictature from 1916 onwards.

He was the representative of "Oberost" ...

... the high command over the areas occupied by Germany during the World War in Poland, Ukraine, the Baltic States, Belarus and Russia, whose populations were mercilessly plundered and also deported to Germany for forced labor, which was not an "invention" of the Nazis!

The pictures - the first shows Jewish Poles who are forced by Germans to build roads - are both from 1916 ...:

Hindenburg continued through his - knowingly! - Mendacious statement before a Reichstag investigation committee on November 18, 1919, the so-called "stab in the back legend" into the world, with which he blamed the German "Left" and the Jewish Germans for the lost World War:

He deliberately deceived the public in that he was - fictitious! - stated:

"An English general rightly said: The German army was stabbed from behind. Where the guilt lies is clearly shown."

He made his second biggest mistake on January 30, 1933, when he appointed the head of the Nazi party, Adolf Hitler, as Reich Chancellor, after allowing reactionary cronies like Franz von Papen and Alfred Hugenberg to persuade him that one could talk to the criminal Nazis with conservative politicians surround them, "wall them in" so to speak, then everything won't be that bad ...

But Hindenburg made his biggest mistake on March 24, 1933 - 88 years ago today!

After the Reichstag, which was dominated by the Nazis, had decided it together with Hugenberg's "German National People's Party", Hindenburg signed the notorious "Enabling Act" and put it into effect!

With his signature, Hindenburg practically suspended the German constitution and parliament and gave the Nazis blanket power to do whatever they want in the future - including unconstitutional acts!

In his speech to the Reichstag delegate in the so-called "Kroll Opera" at Berlin's Tiergarten ...

... (the actual Reichstag building was set on fire in the night of February 27th to 28th, 1933 among what were ultimately unexplained and was completely destroyed inside) ...

... Hitler had also quite openly announced the dictatorship he was planning ...:

"It would contradict the meaning of the national survey and would not be sufficient for the intended purpose if the government wanted to negotiate and request the approval of the Reichstag for its measures on a case-by-case basis."

And he threatened openly:

"May you, honorable Members, now make the decision yourself about peace or war."

Meanwhile, illegally armed SA and SS thugs crowd the stands and the corridors of the Kroll Opera House ...:

The last free words in the Reichstag were left to SPD member and party chairman Otto Wels ...

... reserved, who justified the rejection of his parliamentary group - hardly to be understood by the roar of hatred and the scorn of the Nazi MPs:

"Freedom and life can be taken from us, but not honor. (...) At this historic hour, we German Social Democrats solemnly acknowledge the principles of humanity and justice, freedom and socialism. No enabling law gives you the power to create ideas that are eternal and indestructible. (...)

We greet those who are persecuted and oppressed. We greet our friends in the kingdom. Your steadfastness and loyalty deserve admiration. Your courage to confess, your unbroken confidence guarantee a brighter future. "

Wels was able to escape arrest by fleeing immediately after his speech. In August 1933 the National Socialist government revoked German citizenship in the first expatriation list of the German Reich Wels - he died in exile in Paris in 1939.

Generally speaking, January 30, 1933 is seen as the day when the Nazis "came to power".

But that's not true!

The real seizure of power was exactly 88 years ago today, when Hindenburg unconditionally surrendered Germany and the Germans to the Nazi criminals by signing the Enabling Act ...

Paul von Hindenburg had not to see in his right mind which Pandora's box he opened before 88 years. He died on August 2, 1934...:

On the same day, Reich Chancellor Hitler also took over the office of Reich President and had the soldiers of the Wehrmacht sworn in personally...:

The formula of the oath was:

"I swear to God this holy oath that I will unconditionally obey the leader of the German Reich and the people, Adolf Hitler, the commander-in-chief of the armed forces and, as a brave soldier, be ready to give my life for this oath at any time."

From that day on Hitler was the almighty "Führer" and the German Army became the Hitler-Wehrmacht ...

Hi Martin

As Karl rightly says a dark , dark day for sure

Although a very imposing figure militarily , causing a butchers bill of unbelievable numbers in WW1 and as a result of this days action the same in WW2

Interesting to read

Thanks

Eighty-eight years isn't that long in an historical sense when you think about it. In that time a great deal has changed, but sadly a lot hasn't. We hope "lessons have been learnt" but it is obvious from recent events that old national tensions still exist.

Another time historical facts are accompanied by a one-sided socialist political view.
Today - 88 years ago - Hindenburg was 85 years old and he refered regularly to Hitler as the "Bohemian private" - still he possibly knew much more about the "Führer`s" limited abilities than many other people at this time. He certainly was not the heroic military genius that people looking for a leader in desperate times wanted to see in Hindenburg but he had just kept Hitler from becoming Reichspräsident in 1932 and from becoming Reichskanzler by passing chancellorship first to Kurt von Schleicher in December 1932.
Without going deeper into events that preluded this decree it enabled the government of a coalition (not "the Nazis" but "Cabinett Hitler" with initially just three members of the Nazi party) between the NSDAP and the catholic "German National Peoples Party" (DNVP) to release laws without consent of the Reichstag (Parliament). Hindenburg as the Reichspräsident still could not be bypassed when laws were to be given. At that moment the future actions of the Nazi party and their final destruction of all democratic institutions of the Republic of Weimar was not that clear as it is from todays perspective.
While I generally like informations about unknown events in history I think that the presentation of these events should not be accompanied by gross judgements and emotional political views. We should all curb our dog(ma).
Cheers, Martin
