The Abyssinian Emperor Falls In Battle Against The Mahdists!

At the time of the so-called Mahdi uprising, Emperor Yohannes IV ruled in the Christian empire of Ethiopia (at that time they said "Abyssinia").

From the beginning of this Muslim liberation movement, the Emperor had more or less openly supported the British in neighboring Sudan, using his warriors to cover the retreat of Egyptian-British troops from isolated Sudanese garrisons.

The British, for their part, support the Ras Mengesha Neguse Negest (his official title) with arms deliveries.

So it is - also in view of the religious differences - only a matter of time before Yohannes IV. rumbles together with the successor of the Mahdi, the Caliph Muhammad Al Mahdi bin Sayyid Muhammad es Senussi ...

In 1887 the Mahdists are victorious at Debra Sin and are able to conquer the Ethiopian city of Gonder...

They plunder the city - and so thoroughly that from the old city only part of the fortification wall is left today, which can be seen in the picture above...:

Yohannes IV tries now diplomacy first: he makes an offer of peace to the caliph of the Mahdists, which he rudely rejects.

The emperor then proclaimed a state of war with the Mahdists, mobilized his troops and announced that he would march against Khartoum.

In March 1889, the Ethiopians attacked Sudan, which at the time was almost completely ruled by the Mahdists.

Khartoum is not the actual destination, but the city of Omdurman right next to it, which serves as the capital of the Mahdists...:

The Abyssinian troops even carry their ancient artillery with them...:

On March 9, 1889, the Battle of Gallabat (also called the Battle of Metemma) took place.

Towards afternoon the Mahdists lost the battle!

Then, however, with victory in sight, Emperor Yohannes IV is fatally shot by a Mahdist sniper...:

The previously disciplined Ethiopian troops then fall apart and retreat in haste.

On March 11, the Mahdists give chase and in a second battle on the Atbara River...

...the Ethiopians are crushed...:

The Mahdists manage to capture the corpse of Yohannes IV and take it with them to their capital, Omdurman.

There his head is displayed on a spear.

An area of the globe in constant conflict for centuries. Britain and Italy spent much treasure in their respective involvements there, and the buggers are still at it now in 2022!
Anthony Mockler's book "Haile Selassie's War" gives a good overview of the conflicts of the 19/20th Centuries.
