Is there any documentation concerning the color of these canoes? Most depictions show a black/dark green camouflage. The IWM canoe is painted in such a scheme. However the only surviving example is assumed to be No.6 "Cachalot" which is on display at the Combined Military Services Museum, Maldon, Essex. This canoe was "restored" and is finished in one solid color....possibly gray or a dark green.

'The Cockleshell Canoes" by Quentin Rees does state that the finishing coat was Admiralty Grey 507 (p100). Any additional info out there?

I would suggest that you contact the Combined Services Museum in Maldon, Essex, UK, directly. I’m sure they’d be able to help as they have extensive archive material on the cockleshells.
By the way, the museum is absolutely fantastic. Full of real treasures and well worth a visit. In fact I would urge as many people to go as possible because like so many museums it is finding it hard to survive in these difficult times. You will not be disappointed.

FYI - the only surviving example on display at the Combined Services Museum in Maldon, Essex, UK, is painted Battleship Grey (Admiralty Grey 507) according to the staff. That corresponds with 'The Cockleshell Canoes" by Quentin Rees. All the pics I've seen of later canoes in the green/black schemes must be post-Frankton raid.
