Hi im nearly finished painting a metal kit and have been using vallejo paint.
I was wondering if you should spray a matte finish over the top.
Do most painters do this.

thanks

Not necessary. Oil painters do it to get rid of the glossies but Vallejo should be matte enough as it is.

I am going to do it just to add a layer of protection to my figure. I find Vallejo Model Color quit easy to wear off. Not that I'm handling them, but I want more protection.

Tom,

I will quite often give my figures a coat of Dullcote or Lusterless Clear matt varnish after painting to seal the paint and reduce any shine. It can be painted on if you want to add extra shine, and I will often use it to seal in pastel chalk which I add to create weathering effects. I use vallejo acrylics and they can still produce shine, particularly blue and dark green colours.

If you don't need the protection I would definitely advise giving it a skip.

Any matt varnish or overcoat comes with some slight risk - the colour looking a bit flat, whitish residue in the recesses or even clouding. Plus matt varnish over an existing matt surface is actually slightly more prone to issues than if you were applying it to a high-gloss surface.

Matt varnish reduces the contrast and the soft blended areas. I only do it, when absolutely necessary. But it is necessary I prefer Vallejo Air (!) matt varnish used with the airbrush and only with an absolutely thin layer. It is 100% matt and has a less "kill" factor than others --- in my eyes.
