Aus der Traum von Afrika!

On May 13, 1943, the African adventure of the Hitlerites came to an end!

The German "Army Group Africa" (the former "Deutsches Afrikakorps") under Field Marshal Rommel's...

...successor General Hans-Jürgen von Arnim...

... must, together with their Italian allies under Marshal Ettore Bastico...

... surrender to the Anglo-Americans at Tunis (Tunesia)...:

The troops are completely exhausted...:

150,000 German and 125,000 Italian soldiers are taken prisoner of war...:

Their general does not have to walk but is chauffeured into captivity...:

Hitler and Mussolini's African adventure brought the following casualties:

Dead, Missing, Prisoners:
Italians: 362,341
German: 151,994

French (Vichy): 3,343
British: 220,000
Americans: 18,221
Free French: 16,000
What is largely unknown - and the German side likes to keep it secret and instead describes the Africa campaign as a "war without the SS":

In the event of a victorious German advance into Egypt, there was already a task force in Athens under the command of SS-Obersturmbannführer Walther Rauff (the inventor of the "gas vans")...

... which was then to begin immediately with the extermination of the Jewish population in Egypt and Palestine and on July 20, 1942 had received the necessary instructions for its activities in the rear army area from Rommel's staff.

In Tunisia, Jewish residents were already being taken to forced labor by members of the German Africa troops...

...and several camps had already been set up for Jews to be deported, in which 39 people died who had the misfortune of being in the German-Italian sphere of influence at the wrong time.

In this respect, the Allied victory did not come a day too soon...!
