Happy Birthday, Squeeze Box!
On May 6, 1829, the Vienna-based piano and organ builder Cyrill Demian...
...who, in his house at Mariahilfer Strasse No. 43 runs his business, has applied for a patent for a completely new musical instrument.
In the detailed plans...
...and descriptions he submits say the instrument, "which is in the form of a small box, in which springs are mounted on steel plates together with a bellows, in such a way that it can be easily inserted, is therefore particularly desirable to travellers must be."
On May 23, 1829 he was granted a "Privilegium" (patent) for inventing the instrument...:
...that he calls "Accordion" (at that time with "i" and two "c")!
The firstinstruent is still quite simple - it only has a few buttons on one side! - but already has all the characteristics of the instrument as we know it today...:
Unfortunately I never learned to play the "squeeze box" as it's called here - although my dad had one!
But without an Accordeon (in German), no French music in the old films with Jean Gabin and others that I love so much ...
...and that's played so nice by Lydie Auvray...:
Without Akkordeon no shanties...
... and certainly no Cossack music ...:
Here is my favorite song: "Прощание славянки / Proshchaniye slavyanki - "Farewell Slavianka"...:
