Hi guys,

Working (a little desperately) to finish a figure for Model Expo this coming weekend and have hit a road-block... how to do Brass convincingly in oils?

I have enamel / acrylic but I'm not after a bright glittery look that these will give me... I am doing a 54mm WW2 commonwealth soldier and the brass concerned is the various buckles on the webbing...

I'm pretty sure it would have been pretty dull after a couple of weeks in the field but am not sure what I should be after... just not bright and shiny :)

Any suggestions first on what colour I should be aiming for and your second question for 10... does anyone have any techniques they'd care to share?

cheers. Jerry.

(I think I can... I know I can :)

Hi Jerry

Try using your enamel gold with a small touch of sepia oil and some matt clear enamel mixed together, this should give a dull brass colour to be able to get you out of a fix, then high light with a little silver enamel added to the first mix......

Hi Jerry,

I think Dave's on the money.

I use Vallejo acrylic Brass for painting brass on webbing etc, and I often mix a bit of leather brown or raw umber into the brass to flatten out the colour and take someof the shine off. Another way to do this is overcoat the brass with some matt acrylic lacquer or dull coat.

You're right to think that the brass becomes dull very quickly. Unless its regularly polished with brasso it becomes dull and lustreless within a few days. Unless your figure is on a parade ground, his brass would almost certainly be a very dull in colour.

Cheers

Thanks very much guys...

Tried the mix of Enamel and Oils and am very happy with the result :)

cheers. Jerry

(and yes, the figure is for Expo in Melbourne)...
