Metal Finishes on Flats

Dear all
I've been tinkering around with some techniques for painting plate metal and chainmail on flats.
I've used a wholly non metalic paint, metalic paint and washes over polished metal.
Each of these three have brought quite acceptable, albeit quite different results.
Is there an accepted technique from a judging point of view?
Also if framed and glazed should this be removed for competition judging

Most of what you see at shows for rendering metal on flats is the "non-metal metals" method - e.g. using grays for silver and yellow ochres for gold. Think the Old Masters. However, there is no rule, and if you can pull off one of the other techniques to a high standard, I'm sure it would be judged accordingly.

Likewise, there is no rule on glass, though my personal preference is no glass. It is very hard to see and photograph something behind glass - but others would disagree, I'm sure.

Painted illusion only. So basically use paintings as a guide to how to render mail and plate and other polished metals.

Also if framed and glazed should this be removed for competition judging

No glazing may be a good idea to make sure they can get a proper look at the paintjob.

Much appreciated, as recommended I'm going for fully painted using some some old masters for reference, resisting any metallics.
Proving to be quite a challenge to get the illusion right.
