I have a 1/6 Terminator 2 Arnie figure in Vinyl that I started about 10 years ago and have decided to finally finish.

I would like to use Testors Metalizer on the exposed metal parts (Chest, face, knee etc) but having never painted a vinyl figure before want to be sure this paint is acceptable on this material. These paints seem to be a lacquer based paint with quite a strong solvent base.

I have read that you should use acrylics on vinyl, but acrylics are generally pretty poor when it comes to metalics, and I have a decent selection of Testors metalizer.

Does any one have any experience of using Testors metalizer on vinyl? Will they dry and not attack the vinyl?

Thanks

Yes for shure it will attack the vinyl.
Not yet now and to fast but in a year or maybe later.
You should only use waterbased coulors or acrylics like tamiya which you thinned with ethanol.
And be also careful with your finished matt lack.
I cannot explain it in englisch very well, but it when you used testors it will come out something from the vinyl which get the kit a shiny. I get many kits which will broken since the last 10 years.
I think tamiya gets very fine metals too.

I am planning on using Tamiya acrylics for the rest of the figure, but am looking for some decent metalics, and I have a few Testors metalizers that produce very fine finishes. My experience with Tamiya acrylic metalics is that they have quite large 'grain'.

Does any one have experience of a good acrylic metalic? I've heard Games workshop make a good silver, but they are not very common in New Zealand, neither are Vallejo.

You'll be working over primer won't you? If so that'll tend to solve any potential issue.

I'd try a web search for the paint and "vinyl kit" or something like that, you're sure to find some mention if there's a problem.

i would agree with Einion, i have that figure and he's covered in enamels and various "hot" products, just apply it over a well cured and complete acrylic undercoat!

if your still not sure i have been getting exellent results from Games Workshop metallics.

My concern with using metalizers over acrylic is that the metalizers are lacquer based and the Tamiya acrylic is not the most robust paint. I'll see if I can get the games workshop paint, I know my local model shop has a small selection left (they no longer seem to stock it) and may have silver.

Thanks for the replies so far!

If you're worried about the primer layer I'd recommend automotive primer.

If it's the paint you're worried about FWIW many aircraft modellers shoot very 'hot' paints onto acrylic/vinyl paints by just using very light coats and building the finish.

If you try a test and do find a problem you could airbrush a coat of Future/Klear and apply the metallics over that.
