Can you explain me your avatar .
He is not Florian Geyer but an officer of 8div SS Tottenkopf , the div. took the name of Florian Geyer later in 1944
Basic order given to them " Kill all Jude " . Support of the Einsatzkruppen . Action against partisans
Real combat at the end of the war

As bobtank already has pointed out the SS 8th Cavalry Division "Florian Geyer" was formed in 1942 from elements of the former "Totenkopf-Reiterstandarte /SS Cavalry brigade" and recruits drawn from the German population of the Balkans (Hungary, Romania) and Southern Tirol.
The SS Cavalry brigade (formed in 1940) initially wore deadhead-badges on the collar until March 1941 when these badges were no longer issued to them but had to be passed on to the 3rd SS Division "Totenkopf" which wore them exclusively from then on.
The Cavalry Brigade was involved in a massacre of Russian Civilians and Jews in the Pripjet-area at the beginning of the assault into Russia in August 1941. The Brigade was never used again in that role (the soldiers did not regard this operation as part of their professional duty and many were haunted by this action) but acted as a"fire brigade" in regular combat at different sectors of the Eastern front and against Partisans (the equivalent of today`s "insurgents" or "terrorists"). Finally the Division was annihilated in the perimeter at Budapest.
My father was a member of this unit and took part in their actions until 1943 when he was seriously wounded for the second time. Although the massacre of Jews 1941 by the Cavalry Brigade was disguised from the start as an "Anti-Partisan-Operation" it was rightfully investigated as a war crime by German authorities after WW II. Unlike my father many of his comrades from the Balkans had no choice to join the unit because they were simply drafted into the SS as native Germans and some of them could not even speak German fluently.
From today´s perspective it is very easy to judge these soldiers that were drilled over and over again that every order has to be obeyed - in 1941 many of today`s moralizers would not have lived up to their values.

IMHO people should not easily be judged by their nationality, beliefs, race or their avatar....especially when the judgement is based on over simplified facts.
