Nice sculpting for sure, but I agree with Rob, there is something unusual (negatively for me) about the bust, maybe the odd angle and unnatural position of the hand? Maybe that there are no shoulders in the gap under the collar makes it too slim and tall? Don't know...

Cheers

Leigh is absolutely correct, this harkens to Mike's Obersturmfuhrer bust quit a bit. The likeness Mike captured is nice for sure. But I agree with Rob and Denes, it is not as "traditional" a sculpt as we are used to seeing in this hobby. With that said I kinda like the fact that it comes off as more of a strictly "art" piece in it's unique look. The negative space he allowed by the lack of shoulders, and the strong gometric shapes created by the collars and coat sleeve are very strong visually. Interesting piece Mike!

I agree with Sambaman - it's an art piece. And I love it! And thank god it's not yet another SS bust...

Cheers

Awsome-specially this bust is quite better now, than his Kirin bust.
More typical Richthofen - the excellent pose and the composition is in trend of pasttime - like in the old black white films.
So we doenst need the shoulders, the space is full with unsightable anatomy, the focus to the absolutly liveful smoking pose. Big Art in this small aspect-
Great, MIKE really GOOD. Thanks for showing

Hello Mike,

As much as I admire your original SS bust – as you may remember since you reluctantly gave it to me at Euro-Militaire after some prolonged arm-twisting session :p – for the daring composition and the intense atmosphere, for some reasons, it doesn't quite work with this one.

I'd guess it's something to do with the subject. IMHO the composition called for something sinister and menacing (like the SS officer), not for a radiant and exuberant character like the good ol' baron.

Having said that, I'm glad to see that you haven't lost your touch when it comes to sculpting a likeness. :):):)

Cheers,
Quang

Red Baron

Hey Mike!:)
As always, your sculpting is flawless!
But....
I have to admit that the 'arm' thing doesn't 'Float my boat'! I'm only just learning that you have to mix the two parts of miliput for it to go hard, let alone take on board the dynamics of this piece!!:)
References for the 'Baron' are (or were?) quite scarce and the likeness you've acheived is remarkable!
I like the collar as a backdrop but I have to admit that the arm detracts from it-just my HO!
It would be nice to see this bust as a bronze, and maybe a bit bigger, say 1/4th!
Hope to see you at Euro mate!!!!
Pete

Just my 2 cents but I truly like the composition and the large canvas. It is definately out of the "box", however I believe it is quite striking. I like it so much that I just ordered it. I have a much easier time with large figures and it may be that my eyes are getting smaller!

It is different ....

But i like it and Mike's sculpting is excellent as allways it really looks like Richthofen.

Mike, as everyone else has said...TERRIFIC work! While I probably won't buy this (I'm not much of a bust guy) I really like this piece just because it doesn't follow the "traditional" school of thought of what a bust should be. The fact that so many people are commenting (like or dislike) proves that you have accomplished your goal. The hobby is much more interesting with sculptors like yourself who push the envelope and give us painters a much more interesting piece to place on the tables.

Congrats,
Jim Patrick

The Baron

It's been my fortunate experience to have known Mike, and also to have worked with him way back. A true Master, and also a brilliant Artist, which is where this bust shows his innovative approach to his Art.
This bust does push the bounds of the 'Traditional' style, and can be a bit dissconcerting to that 'Traditionalist' eye.
Mike has consistently produced quality work, and this is no different!
I would like to see someone 'photoshop' this with that WW1 sepia type of photo-would look real!!!

Yep, I am still here.....

Hey Pete! You mean like this?

If this pic works, it is as much down to my buddy Tim Farrell's beautiful paint job as my sculpting. Well, it seems that I have created controversy yet again. That is what happens when you try to be different. At least people are still talking about me. That is a good thing............, maybe?

Thanks to everybody for kind words and criticisms.

Cheers!!

Mike

I think I'm a little nervous about "debating" with artists like Quang, who sculpt such beautiful things for us to paint but this time, for what it's worth... What I see by the angle of his head and the way his arm is held, is a man who is saying "I would be pleased if you challenge me." The "missing" pieces only increase the feeling of un-touchability? Cant really find the word I need.
Great sculpt will be adding it to the collection,
Herb
