Hello all! I'm doing a boxart commision on a mountain man bust (totally out of my realm but I like the diversity) Other than his buckskin colored tunic I'm pretty much at a loss for what colors I can use for certain pieces of his garb like scarf, under shirt, his hat etc. He also seems to have alot of native American type beadery on his hat and tunic and such. One more thing is that he is wearing a hat similar to a baseball cap but with the bill turned up strait in the air. I think I've seen this type of hat worn during revolutionary times or maybe early 1800's (Rogers Rangers?) As you can tell I'm pretty lost so any color plates or even a website would be a great help to me. Also someone told me that Guy Herrick would have a wealth of info on this subject! Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

Hope I'm not opening Pandora's box here, but . . .

Hey Dan:

Mountain Men are so many artists favorite subject, so much character,
weather beaten, worn, etc. You asked about colours for skarf, hat, and
underwear. Well, for those items, my guess is that any color you picked
could not be argued with. After all, that was over 150 years ago. And there
was no color film. Lots of long underwear was red, but not all. Some skarfs
had a pattern like a plaid and some were solid colours.

As I see it, referring to this long ago, no living enthusiasts of this Historical
period could prove that a certain colour was NEVER worn. I don't see it as a
case of you having to prove that a colour you pick is right, but more of a case
of a detractor NOT being able to prove a specific colour was NEVER used. It
can't be done. But of course, this is just an opinon.

Good luck,

Jayhawk

I just emailed you 12 images of different Mountain Men. If you need more or something in particular just let me know.

Dan, I just Googled "Mountain Man rendezvous" and got some good pics. If the coat is not clearly buckskin, you are also free to go with a Hudson Bay blanket coat. Look up "Hudson bay capote" or "hudson bay coat."

It might be worth your while buying the DVD Man in the Wilderness staring Richard Harris ,I've just bougth it on line for £4.50 , "cheaper than some mags". it's a way of getting living colour , it has all the things in that your looking for and it's a really good film to watch.
