I'm sorry, I don't like this stuff at all !

Strangely I got notified by Planetfigure to reply to this because 'there has been a reply to the thread i subscribed'. The system never did that to me before...

And what a neat reminder, as this expression does deserve some attention. Is it spelling regret for having looked? Or, if I may, is it suggesting this thread might not be ideal posted on Planet? The first possibility implies unnecessary rudeness. The second one is worse: it reflects how some believes in the exclusiveness of PlanetFigure.

I was recently fierecely attacked on Planet for making the point that certain members have been explicit in demanding that only a refined range of subject matters, presented in a refined range of scales and styles, should get an outing on Planet. My attacker believed I was the only one with this impression. The suggestion that I was making this stuff up hurt me deeply. I never meant to stir, and I have very good relationships with quite a few Planeteers. It got to such a point that I almost doubted I made this up myself to attract attention, the ignorant youth that is Michael Tse.

And yet, as it has, mean words surface, with probably even meaner subtexts. The wiser me will stop referring this as a "Planet" issue. I now learn this is not about "Planet". See how Gordy leaves friendly and approving comments on virtually every thread on this column and elsewhere? Planet is fine.

But certain individuals are not.

This is a reminder that I did not make such stuff up. These individuals are not a fragment of my paranoid mind. What a terrible confirmation.

These things beg mang questions. But one I feel most relevant is: how well can one put herself in others' shoes? I mean, most of us end up sharing on Planet because we have become fans of a certain theme or era, right? And these themes and eras can diverge so unbelivably dramatically. And provided we are happy with each other's passion with such themes and eras, there is also the question of presentation. Japanese GK style? American GK style? Andrea and Pegaso style? So on. Raised in East Asia and considerably exposed to Manga, there are a lot of things I have been obsessed with for years that I absolutely do not see myself sharing out here on Planet. But the thing is, I personally believe it would be healthy for all these styles and themes to all show up as each Planeteer pleases.

@Jiver that's the best suggestion one can give, we all have certain tastes and if it is not up your alley, skip it.

@Michael , a recent update enabled the 'auto subscription' which can be disabled in ones own control panel if desired : User Control Panel > Edit Options > Default Thread Subscription Mode > (drop down) "Do Nothing" BTW, I find it useful to keep up with my own postings :)

And yes! you ARE correct we are planetFIGURE all things figure related :) not planet54mm-WWI-TrenchRaiders.com or planet120mm-Nicaraguan-Airborne-Troops.com.. :D

Thanks for backing me up, Gordy. It means a lot coming from you.

I can only suggest not to look at it then.

Dear friend, please do not take it personally... Since you publish something really extreme (I think you can admit it) and you put it under our oppinion, you have not the right to order "Do not look". You must be polite and prepared for a negative oppinion...

Michael, excellent work! Don't sweat that it might out of line with the "classic connoisseur figure"--look at my gallery, I paint toy soldiers!

Prost!
Brad

What makes planetFigure unique is that we don't categorise genres of figure enthusiasts into compartments and forums.

PlanetFigure's greatest strengths is its' diversity and variety. What is most important is that we have the chance to look into what other genres are around, we can see the methods and techniques that other genres use in their creations. That strengthens our own genre.

I have myself learned a great many tricks of the trade from car modelers, garage kit sculptors and even 3D digital artists. If we never venture out of our own pond we'll never know there is an ocean out there.

Sure there will be things we will dislike.. but think about this: The wider our audience the greater our chances of getting more people involved with our craft and THAT is a great thing for consumers, for producers, for clubs, for shows, etc :)

Please allow me to straighten out some points:
My work is not extreme. Most of them are characters from famous fiction movies and I fancy all of them. You're negative opinion is not about my skills, but about my choice of subject. So I have no other choice but take it personally. It's the kind of oppinion better kept silently, for one not to start conflicts over taste and two being respectfully towards those who do not share the common way of thinking.
I'm not even a total fantasy 'die hard'.I'm very interested in WWII, and many have asked me why I don't use my skills for this(and others) subject.I always answer the same words: I don't want to be lost in the stream of releases and the passion I put in my favorite subjects will never be equaled.
And there is actually a third reason for an open mind.Ever think about this hobby's future?Probably not, because there's very little young blood.I know today's kids are hang up by there computers and games and etc , but if we put that alongside andlets assume they start modeling, do you honestly think they'd go for WWII or Napoleon, or would they choose my way ?I think you know the answer to that.

Lastly: I didn't 'order' not to look, I 'suggested' it.

Sincerely,

Jiver

Hello,

Love the vampire from Blade (or atleast thats the one it reminds me of if memory serves) and the Joker is a great likeness. Hope I can get my hands on both some day soon.

Nice work, keep it coming!

Take care,
Joe

All very nicely executed pieces, thanks for sharing. I like the Thing piece the best.

As a side note, and I've seen this pop up before here and other forums. There seems to be a lot of discontent when it comes to a "not my cup of tea" or "I don't like it" comment made regarding a persons posting. I've always looked at forums as public display areas or like a table where everyone is sitting down discussing something, or in this case showing off something. Regardless of what is said, pro or con, what does it matter whether someone dislikes a subject or not? While my own philosophy has been if its just put up there for view, if I like it I may comment but if I don't I usually don't say anything. If a poster asks for comment or critique or ends his post with "what do you think?" while not always obliged, I may give a comment or critique either pro or con if I feel it is relative or adds something to the discussion. In that case he opens the door to whatever may walk through. As for the random "I don't like it" well really guys. What does it matter? Does it detract anything from the work? Does it belittle your efforts? Is it denegrating in any way? It is not a comment that is negative to your work nor your character. It is that persons subjective opinion reflective of his personal aesthetic on a piece that he happens to say out loud. A simple statement that harms no one (except maybe a slightly bruiseable ego) and should really be ignored. If it bothers you to have someone say that or to put in their two cents, it may not be in your best interest to put something on display in a relatively public forum at all. Possibly a better response would have been "why don't you like it?" "What is it that makes it not your cup of tea?" If you can't ignore such comments (that if you were more confident in your work would be meaningless) Doesn't your curiosity at least extend so far that you might engage a person to find out more about his opinion that he so boldly disapproved of your work/subject matter? If you don't care to ask such questions, surely you shouldn't care about his opinion....

If only I read this advice one year earlier, I would have avoided my own personal disaster on Planet, as not one, not two, but three senior members sent me private mails with strong languages urging me not to say anything at all if my words are criticisms, not compliments.

This forced me to look real hard at what went wrong with my criticisms, and how have they not been constructive. I also discussed with several understanding frds from Planet who I can trust, and they aknowledge my comments are just fine, but some on Planet can't quite take it (there is a culture about this, if I may put it this way). A friendly suggestion has been, again, simply not to comment in the case of disliking.

I took the chance to openly apologise to all those agitated by my well intended comments in a thread, and surprisingly attracted approval for my candid manners from fellow Planeteers (obviously not including the senders of those 'vivid' private mails). That was very comforting. But nonetheless I stopped givig criticisms and only paid compliments since then. This has gone on for months now.

But with Jiver's case here, I personally do not think the opinion that has sparked a million reactions is one of mild nature. It does deserve the attention, and I am very grateful Gordy made the statements he did. My faith in Planet has returned.

Thx, Joe.
you are correct, this is the reaper vampire from the second Blade movie.

If I don't react at all, it will get worse, take my word for it.I've been doing figures for 20 years now and I don't even want to begin to count the times I had to defend my choice of subject and I admit when I was younger I expressed myself a little sharper. And allthough I became wizer with age and more selective with words, I still recognize those little, sophisticated strikes under the belt.Because like you wrote yourself, if one doesn't like a certain subject or era, ignore it.It's as simple as that.Me for example, I don't like the Napoleon era, as it is my personal opinion it's a completely idiot way of dressing and fighting battles. But this is the first time ever I wrote it.

I like specially the agent.
you are a wonderful sculptor.

And I think we have to accept all opinions. When I will always put oh fine oh nice o good, planet will lost something.

I think everybody should have his rights to write his opinion down.

When I dont want to be hurt I should not present my work.

Thats what modellilng is, different opinions and styles. And thats good all the way.
