Thanks for the comments guys. I see what you mean Nap. Hope to get better by practice and advice. I find the hardest thing is the faces I have done some practice heads using oils that turned out quite well.

Nice work Paul! Easily surpasses my first figures. :)

You are definitely on the right path. (y) Shading and highlighting are, obviously, the biggest challenge for the face, uniform and everything else. You don't want to make your highlights and shadows too stark, but you also don't want them to disappear. Keep on painting, try different approaches depending on your choice of Oils, enamels, acrylics, or all of the above. How To articles on this forum, You Tube (videos) and the internet, in general, abound. Practice, practice, practice...

I look forward to seeing more posts!

Cheers,
Ken

Great start and MUCH better than mine were when I started in the hobby. You have great potential here so keep it up!

Hi Paul, faces are a bugbare for most of us if we are honest. Really like the hussar uniform and as nap says a little highlighting would help the braiding. Try to put a little more contrast in the face to. Bring out the features. Download some good reference pictures of faces and note the light and shadow areas

Great start.. keep it up as Ken says just keep practicing.

Thanks Keith for the comments. I find the faces hardest to do can you suggest any tutorials on this, I have tried painting faces with oils and was able to blend better.

Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul, Andrew has given you some links above and there are quite a few face painting tutorials on You tube, also worth getting hold of the Cartacci Book if you haven't already got it.

I have given up using acrylics for faces on anything above 54mm as not only is blending tricky but the flat finish I find unrealistic. I have just downloaded issue 12 of the Illustrated Historical Artist and there is an article on painting a face with acrylics and overpainting in Oils-haven't read it yet but another technique worth looking at.

Thanks for the links Andrew these are great will try the first link looks good. I haven't heard of this mag but will take a look. I am finding this a great friendly forum and over the moon with the number of people that want to help.
