Let me start by saying I am in awe of the artistry I see in this group. I am humbled. As I've written I’m reasonably new to this hobby, the picture I am posting here is my fourth effort. I have two objectives with painting miniatures: to have fun and make each effort better than the last. I’m definitely having fun. I continue to struggle with faces but with practice it will come. For this miniature I focused on shading, highlighting and the use of washes. I had some successes but other areas I will need to improve on. I’m not happy with the shiny coveralls but once I can get some good matt varnish, I should be able to tone that down a bit. Conventional wisdom says it takes 10,000 hours of practice to master a skill. I guess that means I only have about 9,950 to go. Stay safe all.

Nice figure Bob :)

Absolutely agree with your priorities and good to hear that having fun is the most important.
(Can't remember what my 4th figure looked like, but it wasn't as good as yours);)
Cheers

I ask myself two questions.
Do I like the end result?
Did I enjoy the journey getting there?

That's all that counts.

Believe me, everybody struggles, as what we do ain't easy. Thanks for sharing your stuff Bob. Keep it up.(y)

It's a big learning curve, figure modelling, and we're all on it somewhere Bob. Enjoyment in doing it and satisfaction in the final result is what it's about for me too. Coincidentally, my first figure, way back in the late 60s was a Historex Grenadier not dissimilar to yours, and nowhere near as good.

Hi Bob and a good effort for only your fourth figure. I've no idea how many figures I've painted in 20 years but still find faces a challenge maybe because we are all different and each one represents a different individual.

If l may a couple of suggestions......are you using oils, it looks that way.

1, use a good primer
2, underpaint with a colour close to the final coat as you can achieve.
