Last night I finished this custom bust.
It all started a few months ago, when Diego Munhoz (@diegomunhoz_miniaturasa and @diego_munhoz on Instagram) a friend, miniature painter and professional artist mentioned during an interview that he had always dreamed of having one of his illustrations turned into a miniature.
Some time earlier Gaetan Grey (@gaetangrey.artoon Instagram), a great 3d artist, had approached me and we made a deal - he'd create an original 3d model based on whatever reference I sent him.
As I listened to the interview I immediately thought about Gaetan and sent Diego a message asking if he'd be interested in having Gaetan sculpt something based on his artwork.
Diego was super excited with the idea and he sent me this illustration he had made some time earlier, based on his fiancée and muse Natália:
We sent Gaetan the picture and some pointers.
After a 2 days (yes, 2 days) we got this:
We downloaded the file, had it printed and started working on it.
I struggled a lot with the large, clean areas and how to work the volumes in such cartoony proportions and style.
My first attempts on the face were weird, almost creepy:
But after a good simple green bath and some scrubbing (and a good few months of learning the trade) I went back to it.
I'm the end the result was alright, but being able to help a friend see a dream come true was the best of all.
Cheers!
