Can anybody suggest a color mix in oils for a Native American flesh tones, in this case Poste Militaire's "Rainy Mountain Charlie" Anders suggestion in acrylics was very helpful but any suggestions in oils would be most appreciated. Thanks. :]

Hi Ken. You only paint in oils, don't you? I only paint in acrylics. If you want I can help you becase I have a good color mix in acrylics.

Cheers

Try various mixes of Yellow Ochre, Red Oxide and Mars Black if you have them, plus white (titanium or lead) of course. With a little extra colour added by using a true red for certain areas like lips and cheeks these colours work very well for a wide variety of ethnic fleshtones.

Hi again Ken. I have a notebook where I write my mixes, I've looked for it everywhere and... I hope to find it. I will send you this evening. Sorry

Cheers

Hi, here I am. As you know, all colors are acrylics from Model Color (Vallejo)

Fles:
base: Hull red (985)+orange brown (981)+magenta (945)+flat yellow (953)
lights: 1st.- base+sunny skin tone (845)
mid lights:flat flesh (955)+flat yellow (953)+green grey (971)
3rd lights: White (951)

mid tones: 1st.- base+ magenta (945)
2nd.- base+ochre brown (856)

Shadows:1st.- base+flat brown (984)+violet (960)
2nd.- add turquoise (966)+black (950)

I hope this can help you. If you don't understand anything, ask me (I know my english is too bad sorry)

Cheers

Thanks everybody for your suggestion .... big help :)

Jaime: Many thanks. I used the old Rose brand paints on all my figures back in the "stone age". Vallejo don't seem that much different from them. I have all the colors you mentioned and may give them a go. Figures can always be stripped ;)
By the way Jaime, your english is about 1 million times better tham my spanish :)

Richard will contact Guy off-line to see what he can suggest. The more opinions the better I guess.

Anyway thanks everybody.

Here's my old oil paint formula, I say old because now I paint in acrylics:

1. Base coat- 500812 Sand(Old Polly-S formula)
I don't think this is available anymore so I would probably use
Vallejo Acrylics 843 Cork Brown

2. First layer - Burnt sienna(1)

3. Second layer(light shadow) - Burnt sienna(2) + Brown madder alizarin(1) + Raw sienna(2)

4. Third layer(medium shadow) - Burnt sienna(1) + Raw sienna(1) + Brown madder alizarin(2) + Indian red(1)

5. Fourth layer(highlight) - Titanium white(1) + Cadium yellow(1) + Indian red(1)

6. Fifth layer(high-highlight) - Titanium white(1) + Cadium yellow(1)

7. Sixth layer(Darkest shadow) - Brown madder alizarin(1)

High highlights - Titanium white

Accents - Burnt sienna

Veins - #2(1) + Phtalo blue(1)
Highlight - #5
Shadow - #4

Lips-
Alizarin crimson(1) + Brown madder alizarin(1)
Highlight- Titanium white(1)

Figer Nail: Raw Sienna(1)+Flesh Tint(1)+Titanium White(1)

If you cannot find Brown Madder Alizarin you can mix a comparable color from Van dyk Brown + Indian Red

Numbers in () denote parts of paint: 1 part this color plus 2 parts of this color etc.
Numbers next to # refer to paint mix in that step

This is the formula I used to paint my Wolf Scout from Post Militaire which earned a gold medal at the Chicago Show one year.
Have fun!
