Could you tell me if you got this book, is it a good reference for medieval time? Do you find this book useful to get new idea for painting and some good reference to paint heraldic on shield and on horses?

I like to paint medieval french, italian, english and german. I like also the templar knight.

Thanks

Clarence

An excellent reference. But as with all heraldic compilations, the onus is on the end-user to discern whether or not the illustrated arms are truly appropriate for the subject and/or period. Most of the arms illustrated cite their provenance, and it behooves the reader to follow-up on these.

Unfortunately, it is limited exclusively to English medieval ("feudal") arms. And it is not without errors. But if I had to recommend a single, illustrated source for English medieval heraldry, this would be it.

Insofar as the Templars are concerned, there is only one device you have to concern yourself with: a red cross. The rest is making sure the red cross is displayed on the garment of the right colour and type. This information can be gleaned from the Rule of the Order. Any other reference for the Templars is superfluous.

Take a look at the HERALDS & HERALDRY and MILITARY ORDERS folders on this site--there is much valuable information contained therein.
