Les Goumiers Marocains, in English : Maroccan Goumier Rifles !
The Moroccan Goumier were soldiers belonging to goums, light infantry units of the African army composed of mainly Moroccan native troops under French supervision. These units have existed from 1908-1956.
First supplementary and regular, the goumiers have mainly illustrated during the Second World War, between 1942 and 1945, during which the four groups of Moroccan tabors (GTM) each comprising three tabors (battalions) which bring together three goums or four (companies) each, mainly under the command of General William, obtained between 1942 and 1945, seventeen collective Mentions in dispatches and nine to order Body armée1 and Indochina from 1946 to 1954.
The second group of Moroccan tabors (2nd GTM) is after the 2nd Parachute Regiment hunters, one of the six most decorated infantry units of World War II with the 3rd Algerian infantry regiment, the 4th regiment of riflemen Tunisians walk the Chad Regiment, the 13th demi-brigade of the Foreign Legion and Marine Infantry Battalion and Pacific (BIMP).
Italy 1943-1944
In Italy, the most resounding achievement of GTM takes place in May 1944 at the Battle of Monte Cassino during which ten miles goumiers enter the Aurunci Mountains, southern bastion of the German position of Monte Cassino, "clean" the hills from the Garigliano to south of Rome and eliminate three weeks of fighting some of the best entrainées12 German units. During the assault of French troops causes the breaking of the Gustav Line, the German General Kesselring wrote on May 19: "The French and especially Moroccans fought furiously and operated each success by focusing immediately all available forces on points faltered. "13 Most military analysts consider the maneuver of goumiers as critical victory that finally opened the road to Rome to alliés14.
Between April and June, some of the troops was involved in the Ciociaria crimes against civilians.
The goumiers enter Siena 3 July 1944 and end the campaign in San Gimignano.
Alexander and Clark generals had a very high opinion of the military value of goums
