Cheer Old Johnny.Love the shield, but raises a question..was it painted or dyed covering? Madder was the main red and purple source, beyond the rare cochineal beetle hues...and I don’t know that it would have bled? Apologize for my ignorant curiosity ..blame it on your skill with the effect..but does raise the question of how red were their reds etc..
It’s early here and the coffee makes me do it!
Cheers Mike.Nice job Ralph...well done. . Mike
Cheers John.Very nice indeed!
John
Cheers Ken.Good job Ralph! Looks like a fun figure to paint.
Well done,

Very interesting information OJFrom new digging, seems the kite shield of the period would have been leather covered wood, some metal in the frame and then the boss...perhaps linen over the leather...red being a rare and valuable hue, usually reserved for high status, suggests the axman might have had linen on his ...thinking you might have nailed it...the red would have been muted..way moreso than later medieval, tournament heraldry..if your a man were part of a lord’s company would have possibly had the red from the lord, but perhaps only small flashes of it..
Sent Kev what I dug up...
Cheers John.Ralph,
Well done and nice muted colours
Cheers
