Bayern has a king again
(more precisely: two ones!)
On November 5, 1913, Ludwig III. proclaimed King of Bavaria after a constitutional amendment...:
This ends the so-called "Prince Regent period".
Actually, Bavaria already has a king - and his name is Otto Wilhelm Luitpold Adalbert Waldemar von Wittelsbach, and he became the Bavarian monarch under the name of Otto I...:
But Otto I soon turned out to be incapable of governing, officially it was said that he was suffering from "melancholy", today it is assumed that Otto was suffering from a paranoid-hallucinatory, schizophrenic psychosis.
In 1883 he was finally taken to Fürstenried Castle near Munich, which had been specially remodeled for him, where he was to spend the rest of his life...:
Instead, the "fairy tale king" Ludwig II took power as King of Bavaria...
...until he was incapacitated by his ministers on June 10, 1886 - and drowned on June 13, 1886 in Lake Starnberg, near Schloss Berg, under circumstances that are still unclear today...:
Then Luitpold Karl Joseph Wilhelm von Bayern took over...
...as the so-called Prince Regent - and after his death on December 12, 1912, his son Ludwig...
...who is now known as Ludwig III. of Bavaria ascends the throne.
Pretty mess, huh...?
With all this back and forth, it was completely forgotten that the mentally ill Otto I, who was imprisoned in Fürstenried, had never been recalled or incapacitated and had never abdicated.
From November 5, 1913, Bavaria has two kings at the same time! One (Ludwig III) reigns...
... the other (Otto I.) vegetates...:
And it stayed that way until Otto I died unexpectedly on October 11, 1916 in Fürstenried from an intestinal entanglement.
Louis III stay a little more than two years as "sole king"...
...then he is overthrown by the revolution. Since he will refuse to abdicate, the Bavarian revolutionary government will simply send him home on November 12, 1918.
From then on, Bavaria is king-free - even if the current Bavarian Prime Minister shows certain ambitions in the carnival...
