Introduction.
Today’s review offering is from a company that has rapidly captured my imagination and attention. Based in South Korea, Nuts Planet are taking the modelling market by storm with their diverse and addictive range of resin busts, figures and vehicles. In my first review for the company I looked at one of the figures from their 3D printed Trigger range, it won me over big time and earned an overwhelming thumbs up.
Today I take a first look at the 75mm Turkish Foot Solider of the Ottoman Army which forms a part of the Nuts Planet ‘Full Figure’ range. Let’s go take a look and see if the positive award I gave the previous figure holds good here……
First Impressions.
Impressive boxing and packaging is I am pleased to report once more present and offers some of the best presentation I’ve come across, it just goes to show you can have stylish and practical. I just adore that ‘retro’ appearance and branding that makes these Nuts Planet offerings so distinctive.
The box art is the work of modeller Myeong-ha Hwang whose wonderfully talented skills show just what can be achieved, his colourful artwork of the completed figure is included on the top of the box along with a description and catalogue reference while one of the sides shows a further three profiles of the completed figure.
Inside the box and all of that delightful resin is superbly protected by three layers of thick foam padding. Between the top and middle layer of foam is the main body and display base while the remaining smaller pieces are together in a small clear plastic re-sealable bag sandwiched between the middle and bottom layers of foam.
Not surprisingly everything arrived in tip top condition with no damage, faults or missing pieces. You can be more than a little confident these guys have boxing and packaging down to a fine art.
The Figure.
The picture below was clearly the inspiration for this project.
Sculpted by the talented Eduard Pérez the kit consists of 10 individual parts requiring assembly all of which are cast in a light grey coloured high quality resin. The quality of the casting on each piece is quite simply exceptional with the absolute minimum of clean up required, although there are seams present they are minimal and should take no time at all to deal with, flash was largely non-existent. Literally the only major effort needed on your part will be to remove the small casting lugs, I can confidentiality say that this is by far some of the cleanest castings I have ever seen from any manufacturer.
The contrast and depth of detail throughout is in my opinion spot on being neither to soft or too sharp with the resin having a nice workable consistency.
(photos below) Two more examples of Ottoman foot soldiers from this period, this time by way of fine sketch work.
Head.
Some nice features which includes the distinctive ‘Fez’ headwear which has been very nicely sculpted capturing the natural lay of the material and the attached tassel. There is what I would describe as a gaunt appearance to the characters face which definitely adds interest without detracting from the facial features. I would say things verge ever so slightly more on the soft side as opposed to being sharp but there is more than enough to highlight the individual areas such as the mouth, nose, ears, cheeks and eyes. The head hair, eyebrows and moustache look great and there is some muscle tone in the neck.
Main Body.
This includes the torso and both legs. The uniform is just beautiful and includes endless amounts of eye-catching detail with wonderful deep contrasting areas that are going to be very nicely highlighted under the appropriate layers of paints.
The short sleeveless jacket is posed open with its fur edged elaborate design showing further delicate patterning on the front outside surface, there is also a leather strap that lays under the jacket on the right side before crossing the outer left side of the jacket. This beautiful attention to detail continues around to the back showing a natural ruffled appearance to the material.
Worn under the jacket is an equally elaborate shirt, while the majority of this is seen on the two arms it can also be seen from the front of the torso. Nicely detailed and well defined with the button arrangement at the front there is also an open neck collar that lays over the jacket.
Moving to the waist and we have the sash separating the shirt and trousers. Cleverly as you will see further down the page the weapons carried by the soldier in the sash have been moulded together forming the top layer of that sash.
The leg and footwear continues to impress in the amount of detail offered. The leg tassels which act as ties are present while the actual baggy trousers are beautifully sculpted showing huge amounts of attention to detail. The shoes have been impressively copied too.
Left and Right Arms.
Each of these are actually broken down into an upper and lower arm. The upper arms are basically the sleeves of the shirt material while the lower arms are a continuation of the shirt with the hands included. Each of the two parts interlock via small lugs ensuring an accurate alignment and fit. Detail of the shirts material is wonderful while the hands look equally well defined.
