Introduction.
Today’s review offering is from a company that has rapidly captured my imagination and attention. Based in South Korea, Nuts Planet are taking the modelling market by storm with their diverse and addictive range of resin busts, figures and vehicles. In my first review for the company I looked at one of the figures from their 3D printed Trigger range, it won me over big time and earned an overwhelming thumbs up.
Today I take a first look at the 75mm Turkish Foot Solider of the Ottoman Army which forms a part of the Nuts Planet ‘Full Figure’ range. Let’s go take a look and see if the positive award I gave the previous figure holds good here……
First Impressions.

Impressive boxing and packaging is I am pleased to report once more present and offers some of the best presentation I’ve come across, it just goes to show you can have stylish and practical. I just adore that ‘retro’ appearance and branding that makes these Nuts Planet offerings so distinctive.

The box art is the work of modeller Myeong-ha Hwang whose wonderfully talented skills show just what can be achieved, his colourful artwork of the completed figure is included on the top of the box along with a description and catalogue reference while one of the sides shows a further three profiles of the completed figure.

Inside the box and all of that delightful resin is superbly protected by three layers of thick foam padding. Between the top and middle layer of foam is the main body and display base while the remaining smaller pieces are together in a small clear plastic re-sealable bag sandwiched between the middle and bottom layers of foam.

Not surprisingly everything arrived in tip top condition with no damage, faults or missing pieces. You can be more than a little confident these guys have boxing and packaging down to a fine art.

The Figure.
The picture below was clearly the inspiration for this project.
turkish_foot_soldiers_in_the_ottoman_army_pub_by_tile-r233fc6fe842b4b309de8064e13655c1d_agtbm_8byvr_512.jpg

Sculpted by the talented Eduard Pérez the kit consists of 10 individual parts requiring assembly all of which are cast in a light grey coloured high quality resin. The quality of the casting on each piece is quite simply exceptional with the absolute minimum of clean up required, although there are seams present they are minimal and should take no time at all to deal with, flash was largely non-existent. Literally the only major effort needed on your part will be to remove the small casting lugs, I can confidentiality say that this is by far some of the cleanest castings I have ever seen from any manufacturer.
The contrast and depth of detail throughout is in my opinion spot on being neither to soft or too sharp with the resin having a nice workable consistency.
(photos below) Two more examples of Ottoman foot soldiers from this period, this time by way of fine sketch work.

Head.
nuts-12-1018x1024.jpg

Some nice features which includes the distinctive ‘Fez’ headwear which has been very nicely sculpted capturing the natural lay of the material and the attached tassel. There is what I would describe as a gaunt appearance to the characters face which definitely adds interest without detracting from the facial features. I would say things verge ever so slightly more on the soft side as opposed to being sharp but there is more than enough to highlight the individual areas such as the mouth, nose, ears, cheeks and eyes. The head hair, eyebrows and moustache look great and there is some muscle tone in the neck.

Main Body.
nuts-3-536x1024.jpg

This includes the torso and both legs. The uniform is just beautiful and includes endless amounts of eye-catching detail with wonderful deep contrasting areas that are going to be very nicely highlighted under the appropriate layers of paints.
The short sleeveless jacket is posed open with its fur edged elaborate design showing further delicate patterning on the front outside surface, there is also a leather strap that lays under the jacket on the right side before crossing the outer left side of the jacket. This beautiful attention to detail continues around to the back showing a natural ruffled appearance to the material.
nuts-21-983x1024.jpg

Worn under the jacket is an equally elaborate shirt, while the majority of this is seen on the two arms it can also be seen from the front of the torso. Nicely detailed and well defined with the button arrangement at the front there is also an open neck collar that lays over the jacket.
Moving to the waist and we have the sash separating the shirt and trousers. Cleverly as you will see further down the page the weapons carried by the soldier in the sash have been moulded together forming the top layer of that sash.
The leg and footwear continues to impress in the amount of detail offered. The leg tassels which act as ties are present while the actual baggy trousers are beautifully sculpted showing huge amounts of attention to detail. The shoes have been impressively copied too.

Left and Right Arms.
Each of these are actually broken down into an upper and lower arm. The upper arms are basically the sleeves of the shirt material while the lower arms are a continuation of the shirt with the hands included. Each of the two parts interlock via small lugs ensuring an accurate alignment and fit. Detail of the shirts material is wonderful while the hands look equally well defined.

Accessories.
nuts-2-5-1024x768.jpg

These include the sword and weapons tucked inside the sash. The flintlock pistol is nicely sculpted with nice clear detailing giving a great representation of the real item as can be seen from the reference photo below of a genuine Ottoman pistol from this same era.
display_839_OTTOMAN_FLINTLOCK_HOLSTER_PISTOL_CA_1780s-1800s_633686933300468750.jpg

Moulded into the same piece is what I believe to be an Ottoman mace, you will have to correct me if I am wrong on this but certainly my research shows these foot soldiers would have carried such weaponry. Again I have included a reference photo below that shows a genuine Ottoman mace and the similarities are clear.

nuts-9-1024x686.jpg

The last piece of weaponry is the sword and this is shown as being carried in its scabbard and worn on the hip. Looking back to the first reference photo I included as the source of inspiration I would say the sculptor has given us a great interpretation here.
Gentle and careful removal from the attachment points will be required but another clean example of excellent casting.
nuts-11-1024x681.jpg

Below and here we have the staff as held in the right hand of the figure. I have no idea as to the purpose of this, possibly ceremonial I’m not sure and I could find no reference details. Regardless, the kit part looks fabulous and will add interest.
nuts-2-6-1024x768.jpg

Display base.
nuts-2-1-1024x768.jpg

Just a simple affair here but a nice inclusion to have none the less. Having removed the casting lugs from the figures feet I test fitted the figure to the base and the fit was perfect. There is also a small recess for accepting the stick held in the figures right hand. While it is a very basic offering you can of course take things up several layers by adding your own decoration as per the box art example.
Photos.
I have included photos below of the figure as 3D renders taken from the Nuts Planet website.

Synopsis.
My second review of a Nuts Planet subject and I have been left highly impressed once again. Quality is top drawer from start to finish with fabulous casting, rich detailing, great boxing, an unusual subject choice and all at a competitive price point. Certainly an eye-catching piece that is attractive, colourful and I’m sure will gain lots of attention on display.
Nuts Planet are on a fantastic run right now, I love their diversity and the fun factor they are bringing to the hobby. These guys are here for the long term and will go from strength to strength. I am more than happy to award this latest release a highly recommended rating.
My sincere thanks to Nuts Planet for this review sample and the opportunity to share my thoughts. Please be sure to check out the links I have included below for both the companies website and Facebook pages where you can find lots more information and keep well informed of all the latest news and features.

What a great figure. Thank you Martin for this amazing review. As far as I know, pretty much everything is accurate and consistent with the Ottoman History.
Cheers

Hello Martin,

Thank you for your detailed review to such a nice figure from Nuts planet!
If i can contribute something about the weapons, in your description about the accesories you describe beside the flintlock pistol that there is an Ottoman mass, it looks like but it is isnt, it is a sword call yatagan and the same weapon was used from Greeks at 1821 in their war of idependence against the Ottoman Empire. i include a picture of the sword of General Ioannis Makrigiannis to see the similarity. YS Masterpieces made a bust of the general and i am sure you are familiar with this.
Once again thank you very much for your time and your quality review!!
Dimitris.

Dimitris, THANK YOU. It was driving me crazy not being able to identify the weapon. I searched high and low looking for information and found nothing. I'm very grateful you have been able to resolve the situation for me. Great photo of the Yatagan by the way and it clearly shows what a beautiful elaborate weapon it is.

My sincere regards and thanks,

Martin.

Hello Martin,
I am very glad for being helpful, your review is full of historical background and excellent pictures which provide
us the oportunity for a close "inspection" of the model, so if it is something in my knowledge as the type of the sword, i have to share it with you as Osman did with his useful link. As you said Martin, those weapons were full of craftsmanship and so were the uniforms of that era.
Thank you for the excellent review and for your kind words!
Dimitris.
