Hello Jose,

first of all I want to congratulate you for both this excellent figure, as well as the other Tercio de Extranjeros. They are both impressive. I am desperately looking for a Spanish civil war figure (preferably in 54mm) but from the republican size. Are you aware if there is a figure like that available or if there is one that can be relatively easily "transformed" to a republican figure. (i mean tactical republican army not FAI or CNT militia).

Thank you very much in advance

Ilias

Hi Ilias

I think there are plenty of options. If you look at pictures from the SCW, rank and file soldiers didnt really have proper uniforms, other than some pieces of clothing that were more common on one side than the other, like Adrian helmets, flat caps, officer patches, etc.

You couldnt really make a difference between most of the militiamen from the early days and the soldiers of the later regular army (and many times from the enemy)

Have a look at Alpine, Evolution, Hornet or Tommy's War catalogue. They have some figure that you can use with not much transformation.

These are some that Ive transformed over the years

Hi Javi,

thank you for your reply. Wow, very nice figures indeed. I liked especially the sergeant of POUM. What is the basic figure for that? I also recognized the DAK officer of alpine for the figure of Unidad Escocesa de Ambulancias. Is the green thing you use for the transformation miliput or what? And how about the head. Is it of a British Offficer?
Finally I found very interesting the miliciano holding the poster. Is the basic figure here a soviet tankman?
Anyway I have tried also to make a diorama from the SCW and here are the results. The figures are supposed to be FAI members and are based on Master Box 1/35 kit french resistance. I am not sure if the uniforms of the tankmen are correct, but I guess they are, because of the soviet origin of the BA-3. I would be more than happy to hear your comments. The link for the pics (not very good quality unfortunately) are here: http://s1357.photobucket.com/user/sofron2002/library/FAI

I guess I will need to make more research on pics and uniforms to have a better overview about details. I recently bought a figure from Alhambra models with a durrutti militia man. I can't wait to receive it. But I must say the two Tercios from Beneito above are absolutely fantastic and I am trying to save money to buy them as well. I would be happy if you could give me any tips if and how they can be transformed to republican ones.

Thank you once again.

Un saludo

Ilias.

Hi Ilias

Nice diorama! I all looks good to me. The tankmen are correct. There are plenty of pictures showing these with soviet headguards. The only thing that doesnt look quite right is Russian sub-machine gun that one of them is carrying. It seems that a few made it to Spain, although havent actually seen any pictures, and it is really unlikely that an Anarchist Militia (at odds with the communists - which controlled the soviet arm delivery) will receive any of these. For future projects you can use the German weapon set from Tamiya http://i642.photobucket.com/albums/uu144/completearmourmodelling/100_4444.jpg The two sub-machines at the bottom are pretty much like the ones used in Spain.

Also, the republican flag on the BA is rather unlikely. Only one author states that some re-captured tanks had the bottom red stripe of the flag that nationalists used to paint on captured tanks repainted in purple, although there is only one picture (I think) of a BT-5 in which you cant really tell if purple or red.

Glad that you liked my figures :)

That POUM figure was an old Alhambra one which I tranformed a little and added the flag. I painted it ages ago, although have finished the flag just recently.

Yes, for the Scottish Ambulace Unit soldier I used that Alpine figure with reference HBH13 from Hornet

The militiaman carrying the poster is a SS Panzer crew from Alpine

The others are Mantis, Evolution, Tank, Tommy's, etc.

If you need 1/35 heads for your Republican side figures you can use these from Hornet
http://www.greenwichgateway.com/hornetandwolf/hornet/headsets/pages/HFH02.htm

Unfortunately, those two Beneito soldiers from the Tercio arent easy to convert into a Republican one. The Mills canvas ammo belt was replaced well before the civil war and none of the sides used it.

There are quite a few figures from Alpine that can be used (always bearing in mind that there wasnt really an uniform as such)

And from Stalingrad

That green putty I use sometimes is Duro (can also be calle Kneadatite, Green Stuff, Sylmasta). Very cheap on eBay

If you have any doubts or need anything, send me a PM and will give you a hand. Happy to help

Thank you very much for all this information Javi. I ll let you know when I have finished something. Do not hesitate to contact me as well if you need any information about Greek related figures. By the way, do you have any interest in the Greek Civil War. there a lot of similarities with the Spanish one. Anyway rhanks once again
