Hey guys,

I have been trying to get my pictures to look better. I think these are getting there and it has also helped to get me motivated to get back at the desk. Here are a few pictures of my old work.

Let me know what you think.

Hhhhmmm, Billy Idol on acid???

Joe, I don't know how you are lighting your figures, but you will get a lot better effect of you try to match the lighting to the painting:

We shade and highlight figures to enhance their 3-dimensional appearance. In doing this we try to recreate a light that shines on the figure from the front at between a 45 and 60 degree angle. This spills good solid light onto the front of the figure, while casting nice shadows beneath any projections.

To duplicate this with your photo lights, simply place the lights above and in front of the figure, pointing directly at it. Keep the lights far enough away so that they don't intrude into the picture frame, but close enough so that the "spill" of the light fully covers the figure.

These photos look as if the light is shining directly from the front. This lighting defeats some of the painting because it shines directly into the shadow areas. This does not show the figures in a flattering light. (pun intended!) If you raise your light source several inches you will no longer have light shining in the shadow areas and the photos will magically look 100% better!

I hope this helps.

Joe-

Wonderful figures. I tend to agree with Mike's comments on the lighting.

Personally, I do not think the backgound works out well either. Try a lighter blue or off white.

The nicest thing about digicams are that you can take many many pics under many lighting and camera settings. I keep my laptop right next to my photo set up and just shoot a few, down load and see if they are any good.
