Over the coming months, El Greco Miniatures, in collaboration with Stephen Mallia, will be bringing to you a series of Painting Tutorials to cover all aspects of painting 54mm foot figures and mounted figures. The Tutorials will be featuring figures from El Viejo Dragon Miniaturas. The central figure will be that of a mounted Alexander together with 6 other foot figures from the Macedonian and Thracian infantries. The end result will be a diorama constructed with the said figures.

The tutorial is geared toward the beginner, but I for one, will be following this closely as I am a long time fan of Stephen Malia's figures and painting techniques.

Guy,

This is what I call an interesting topic. Too bad it deals with acrylic painting being myself an oily, but it surely will be of use to many a figurinist.

Very good initiative, Stephen!

Johan ;)

Guy,
Thanks for posting this. Of course I am very interested in this and will
follow it also. Being a new painter I am always learning something new.
I too wish it was in oils.. but again..starting from the beginning to finish
will be of great help to me.
Thanks..
dee

Hi guys, as Guy quite rightly put it, this tutorial is intended for the very beginners. It's aim is to draw to our hobby new people. This thing worries me a lot and am always thinking how to attract new comers to this hobby, especially young people. While the more experienced hobbyist might find it a little naive , the newby has lots of info and can always contact me personnally for further clarifications on any particular issue.

Johan and Dee... it's not a problem if you have questions while painting in oils. I did too a while ago!!

Stephen, I just may take you up on your offer. I just started in this hobby Sept. last year. I joined our local club here in Atlanta, GA. The guys are really great and help me a great deal. I am just on my 3rd figure... I really enjoy it. What I would like to do is get the same kit and work along with the tutorial I have had guidance from Bob Knee Jr. He has been a tremendous help to me.
Looking forward to the project.
Thank you
Dee

I have been a lurker here for far too long. After having seen Stephen's work, I am very interested to learn anything I can from him. As my old PE teacher used to tell me. "If you learn ONE thing a day, you are doing just fine!"

I'm also an oil painter, but found some intresting ideas that may come in useful. Thanks for sharing

after having read the article, I realized that I am not thinning the paint down nearly enough(was going to a 1 to 1 ratio). Well, I sat down last night, and lo and behold, the 8 or 9 to 1(really more like pigmented water) gives a much better control. So, despite my best efforts, I did learn something......

Jim and Kim , you're most welcome. Again I invite you and anybody to write to me personally if you encounter any problems. Soon We will handle the painting of a face so that would be really interesting
