Greetings everyone!
I am new here and I have been tossing back and forth the idea of creating a line of busts from the Battle of the Little Bighorn, June 25, 1876. I was thinking of 1:6 scale but am not sure if this is the best scale or should I say, the most popular scale in military modeling. I had two reasons for this decisions: one was more impressive display and secondly, my eyes when painting are getting worse and I thought the larger scale might be more welcome. Would you mind sharing your thoughts on preferred scale? Do you prefer busts (watch it!) or full figures?

I noticed a poll concerning accuracy and these would be as accurate as I can get based on the information we know of the people involved but also trying to make it a pleasing, story telling pose. My thoughts in this series would be participates from the battle in different "recorded event" poses such as:

Lt. Col. George Custer: holding lowered binoculars from when he first viewed the Indian camp from the Crow’s nest. Possibly two different head choices, one with hat, one without.

Crazy Horse: holding his winchester above his head with one hand and war shield in the other.

Captain Tom Custer: Holding his colt revolver in left hand, cylinder open. His right hand reaching back to get another cartridge, face with look of surprise.

Sitting Bull: Holding a bull buffalo skull out in front, eagle bone whistle in his mouth, 50 cuts on each arms, during his sundance where he had a premonition of the defeat of the 7th a few days prior to the battle.

Benteen: Holding his hat in one hand and Custer’s last message he just received from trumpeter John Martin

Just some initial ideas. I have made contact with a sculptor and we will be using photos of real items and the real people when available to make these as authentic and accurate as possible. I will be contacting a caster soon to get prices in order and to see if this is even doable.

This would be my first endeavor in something like this and I want to start off in a good way. Please share your thoughts on scale, subject matter, etc … positive or negative on this idea. You could share your thoughts here on this forum or email me [email protected].

I hope I can make this happen but I can't promise right now. Thank you so much for you time.

Hi Andy ,

Welcome to PF ...I only paint busts as I don't likev legs!..lol

......like the idea of the busts if I may comment in my opinion 1/6th is too big , 1/9 or 1/10 or even 1/12 as the last is also popular .

As we get older larger scales some folk tend to buy the larger scales from comments I have seen in PF

Whatever scale you decide will these be limited editions as obviously cost is the prime consideration bring realistic.

If I can be of further help in your venture please do pm me via this site

Good luck ...what will the comany be named ?

Hi Andy,

I have two different thoughts on this.

Firstly, by following the already popular scales of 1/9, 1/10, & 1/16th scales for BUSTS, you have a ready made modelling audience as the new figures would sit comfortably alongside existing collections.
For myself, I would look favourably at any new plains warrior bust in these sizes.

Secondly, by moving into 1/6th scale, apart from an impressive model figure, there is already a niche market of 1/6th scale figures you could 'key into'
In addition, at that scale there is also a market for premium priced bronzed resin sculptures in the tourist/giftware/commemorative markets.
Potentially this could prove to be an even more financially rewarding marketplace than ours.

Whatever path you take I applaud you.

Paul.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I am still researching but from what I have gathered the American West, especially what I have been thinking of doing isn't all that popular. Here is my sketch of the Custer bust I am thinking about.

This is an interesting thread. The only company I know that produces commercial busts in 1/6th scale is Naked Army. I've painted several of their busts and they are simply stunning pieces of sculpting and casting, and they need to be absolutely perfect in every way. At that scale, every detail - every stich of fabric, every line on the face, every small detail is visible to the naked eye. Unless you intend to get a museum quality sculpting, don't bother with 1/6th scale.

As others have said, the more commercially successful scales for busts are 1/9th and especially 1/10th scale. These have the added advantage of being relatively cheaper to produce and purchase, compared to 1/6th scale.

Thanks Tony. I have been working on 1:6 figures and action figures for so long that sometimes I get stuck with that scale. The sculptor I have contacted is Miquel Zuppo who recently sculpted Charlton Heston as Moses. I think he handles details and likenesses real well.

Dear friend, welcome among us
I'm from the other side of the mirror; I simply hate busts .
Nowadays, I can recognize a could sculpt and the " Moses" you show is one of them, but seing it with my corrupted mind, I imagine it painted marmorean siting on a chimney
