Purchased this bust of a crusader from JMD this morning and i thought about putting my cell phone camera in use and do a little SBS on how i paint a face. First of all i always have premixed shades of the color i m using. So this is my "pallete" (they are from Kinder chocolate)

The basic mix consists of raw sienna, burnt sienna, napples yellow, brown madder and a touch of pthalo green, all from sjojona's acrylic gouache line. Now i know that acrylics are supposed to be used as layers of transparency but i rather use the like oils. So small dillutions work better for me. Here is an example of a single stroke result of the color just to give an idea of the consistency.

Ok so first in line whould be the highlights which are nothing more than the basic mix adding more and more napples yellow hue. Here is an example of the first lights.

Moving on i add more lights here and there until i get a good idea of where the shadows should be placed. Shadows in this case were made adding pthalo green and burnt sienna to the basic mix.

Finaly i use filters of various colors like red for the cheekbone area and the tip of the nose, violet for the sides of the nose and violet with pthalo blue for the are under the eyes. So here is the result so far. Some touch ups are always in line like extreme lights and shadows.

Hi Dimitrios!

beautiful fleshtones!
Yesterday, I saw in web a tutorial from Michigan toy painting Andrea Red Baron bust with Andrea flesh set. The method is like you discribe here, the acrilics used like oils more or less...
My doubt is in the blending the highlights, Base, Lowlights:(

Thanks for the class!!!

Pedro, Gary thank you for your comments. Pedro the thing is that when you have premixed shades like Andrea colors also are, it s easy to find the right tone you need for blending so after some getting used to, it s really easy and very quick.

Steve i m sure that alot of people here whould explain better but as far as i know gouache is a kind of pigment water based, like acrylic. The difference is that gouache will come of if it comes in contact with water after setting. Hope i make sense.

Joe, Carl thank you guys for commenting. Made some progress on the face and blocked the beard and hair to get an idea of the overall balance. Also my phone's camera changes brighteness according to the surrounding colors. Next will be lips and moving on to hair.

Amazingly painted, and great SBS.
I like your style and how you work with the paint.
But if i speak for myself....i've seen it maybe a hundred time's i cannot get the feeling for blending with acrylic paints.
So i stuck with the oils. Tried your red mix.....translate it in oils and it worked fine.
But the way how you handle this bust with this paint: hat of.
