Can anybody point me in the direction of a good tutorial for painting black uniforms (german panzer crew) in 1/35?

May I second that request? I was just about to post a question about mixes for black (other than using lamp black) using oil paint. So I would love to hear what some members have to say about this.

I have had some success with creating a black mixture that includes nearly any black (Mars, Ivory, Lamp they all have a different look) and jaune brilliant, or flesh tint. This makes a warm dark gray, this can then be shaded with whichever black you used in the base. Highlights are made by adding more of the highlight component you chose to the base. Wet on wet you can usually get away with adding the highlight component directly and blending.

Mars Black-very pure black

Ivory Black-tends toward brown

Lamp Black-tends toward blue

I like to mix my own black, guess you might say I do things the hard way.

I achieve a very brilliant black by mixing equal amounts of Burnt Umber, Prussian blue and Magenta.

Painting a black uniform:

1- Base = I use the mixture above to which I add a little more Burnt Umber and Magenta.

2- Highlights = Naples yellow.

3- Shadows = my black mixture.

Cheers
Roc. :)
