I have got the Mig miniatures Hunter of the steppes, and I'm having a drama with the eagle. I was thinking of a light base coat then thin washes of various browns. Please don't mention oils because I've had no success in the past. All pointers greatly accepted.

That's basically how I've painted feathers a few times in the past in acrylics, although not with a wash per se, but with something more like a glaze - so it doesn't pool in recesses - the paint is very dilute, but there's not much of it on the brush.

You will have to apply some highlighting after this often, with paint that's more opaque and often not quite as dilute.
