A thought occurred to my while viewing RP Models' just announced superbly detailed Lord Lovat bust. Is it possible that advances in 3D sculpting and printing of micro textures like canvas webbing, wool uniforms, plastic grips etc. might in some cases inhibit rather than aid painting?
Are such textures more suited to acrylics versus oils?
Will modellers turn to staining the casting rather than actually painting it?
I am not sure that busts such as these, which represent an immense technical achievement for RP to be proud of, will fit my painting style, which is to indicate a lot of detail with paint. I am not trying to be a luddite but I think in a lot of cases I would prefer a smoother surface that I can add my own detail to with paint, thus making it my own.
I am sure that there will be those who want ultra miniaturized detail and those who prefer to add or indicate it themselves with paint. Some people like ultra realism in 2D art and some prefer some more room for individual expression.
Just some thoughts.
