Folks-

Once again I turn to you for help "unstick" me reproducing the Sam Browne for my Brit Naval Officer 1897 Zulu War from MR.

I am looking for oil recommendations. I want to especially reproduce the almost "white" sheen of the highlight seen in photo below...

Tried combo's of mars, ivory black with various umbers. Base looks pretty good but cannot get the highs to look like this almost "patent leather" shine.

All ideas and suggestions welcome!

Thanks :) :)

Hey Keith, this might seem to be an odd mixture for black, trust me , it will work.

try this mixture:
Base = alizarin Crimson + Thalo green.
Highlight = graphite gray with a bit of white.
shadows = mars black

Cheers,

Roc.

Hey Roc!

Thanks! I'll probably give it a go... What brand is the Graphite Gray? I am only able to find it under Daniel Smith brand.

Just like in the real thing, gloss :) Seriously the best way to reproduce high highlights is to paint modest lighting and then apply some sort of gloss medium or varnish to finish off.

Here the leather isn't that glossy really so you'll probably be best aiming for a satin finish. Since you're using oils you might be lucky and they'll dry appropriately by themselves.

Einion-

Good point. I had planned on adding a touch of stand oil and leaving off the dry box afterwards.

Thanks for the comments. I appreciate it.
