Hi
Which way should you paint Napoleon officers. Should you paint main colour first or lay on the gold for the intricate lacing:

eg. Main colour then gold for lacing

Gold lacing then main colour

I am at a loss as to which is best and would like other members' opinions.

main color first, with shading and highlighting.
Then dark gold, and highlighting more with pure gold ( or something like that for acrylic)
As I'm a oilpainter. First burnt umber with winsor and newton gold what gives me the shade. And above that with pure gold from winsor and newton highlighting.

I paint the gold lacing first, then paint black around the lacing, and then the main colour.

From the previous posts it seems then that 'You pays your money and takes your choice' ... there are no particular rules on
this, choose whatever works best for you.

That's interesting Edward I paint on a black base after doing the main colour retouching the surround when the lace is complete

BIG WELCOME Roy as well good to have you here

Here is an example of the way I paint it..
