What is the best approach to painting intricate patterns, like on a samurai kimono or Renaissance cape in oils? Practice is a given, but are there any tricks to it?

Kurt

I usually go over the pattern several times on a piece of plasticstruct to find the flow of the pattern. I quite often use a paint pen (comes in various sized points) to do the design and afterwards spray with flat coat. I just re-ordered some from Dick Blick Artist Supplies as they had the type I use on sale.

Hope this helps.

Ok,

I'll bite and ask the "stupid" question... what's a paint pen, how best does it work, and what would you recommend?

Also, Hi Guy! I'll be sending you new pics of two completed figures soon.

So, how about a bit more about these pens if you don't mind. The only thing I've tried so far is Indi Ink pens to draw the design on the figure and then try to paint over the ink.

Thanks,

Kevin D.

The tip width will vary according to how much pressure you apply. There is another brand of paint pens made by a Japanese firm that came in varrying widths. I have used these too until my local supplier no longer carried them.

I just found the other paint pen I used and it comes in different tip widths. The one pictured below is a .005 tip.

Are the paint pens opaque enough to use on a dark background? Or do you paint over them once you have an outline to work on?
