Dear guys, the paint has just dried on this, my first effort of 2019.

I really enjoyed this one. I had no idea what to paint on the shield so I just went with what felt okay at the time. This was a thoroughly enjoyable figure and the best face I've done in a long time.

Any and all comment are welcome. Especially nice ones.

Great looking figure, plenty of attitude and atmosphere. Sometimes it's too easy to go overboard on weathering but you've got it spot on. Shield SBS will be interesting. (y)

Thanks for the kind words guys. Much appreciated. I hadn't a clue. I will be doing an SBS later on. ve never painted anything like that before and I must admit

Superb work overall, but that shield is outstanding.
You've painted it perfectly and managed to get a near 3D effect to boot.
Look forward to your S.B.S.

Cheers,
Andrew

Here is something on an SBS.
I will concentrate on the shield. Basically the rest of the figure is predictable enough really so I didn't bother to do any photos.

With a gladiator shield, within reason, a great many designs are feasible to paint on it. I decided to go for something more elaborate as the figure doesn't have a face as such, due to the helmet.

I have no idea where I came up with the idea of a tiger's face. It seemed a good idea at the time I suppose.

I have never painted anything like this before, as I never thought I was capable. Some will probably say I still aren't!

So I will begin.

It started with acrylic base. It's about three coats of Vellejo beige.

I began by testing out the proportions of the face, marking it out with a sharp HB pencil. This I initially practised on a piece of plastic card, marked out to the exact proportions of the shield. I then though, "sod it" and just carried on the shield itself.

Now time for the oil paint. This is where I filled in the face bit by bit.... I began by marking out the black bits.

Obviously, I am NO EXPERT but just went with what felt the best way.

I then began to add more white on top of the orangey colour and the black bits. I had done the eyes by this stage. it felt more 'complete' once I had filled the teeth in and the mouth area.

Sorry for the awful pictures.

I am obviously making this up as I go along.

I then finished off the tiger face, with the whiskers in thin white lines. By this point the whole thing really did begin to fell more 'finished' it was then a case of adding little bits here and there. The key was knowing when to stop.

I didn't have a clue what to do with the bottom bit. So I simply painting in an impression of a ruby type gemstone, and weathered the rest.

Basically I was making it up as I went along and ran out of ideas. Like you can't tell anyway...

Any questions or comments are all welcome. Thanks for looking this far at least.

Thank you for an excellent S.B.S.
You made the right decision in leaving the lower section minimalist.
The visual effect with just the head is striking.
Very, very well done.

Cheers,
Andrew
