Hi guys, my latest project, Pegaso's Spartan aristocrat. Painted in acrylics apart from a thin oil paint wash on the burnished metal of the sword blade. The design for the Gorgon on the shield I got from a photo of a preserved Greek bronze mirror. Thoughts and comments welcome

Thanks guys, I was concerned the shield design may be seen as a bit cartoonish when compared to the masterpieces doing the rounds these days. My reasoning is that this is a battlefield piece of equipment and would be constantly thrashed and abused even in barracks and constant maintenance and repainting would negate anything too elaborate.

I think it's spot-on mate.

As to those ultra-elaborate works of art on shields that we sometimes see and that look more like something you'd usually expect to find on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, yes they are incredible feats of painting that reflect tremendous skill and talent on the part of the painter and they look fantastic, no doubt about it.

But as you say, these are items of battlefield equipment that would have come in for some serious wear & tear, and you have to wonder to what extent people even bothered with elaborate designs knowing that. Not that I'm a rivet-counter by any means, but with that in mind I do question the extent to which all that Michaelangelo type of stuff reflects reality when it comes to shield designs. Personally I think that the most designs would probably have been more basic. But until someone invents a time machine we'll probably never know for sure either way. I really like what you have done here and it doesn't look in the least bit cartoonish from where I'm sitting.
