I've just created a base for the Pegaso Crusader figure but am having second thoughts.

My idea was that the figure would be on top of a pile of rubble from a destroyed building, perhaps during a siege. But would piles of rubble be lying about like that ain the 12th Century? Were building destroyed so comprehensively or is that a feature of later times? What do people think? Grateful for advice.

Hi Dave...good to see what you're working on.
My thoughts are that there must have been many degrees of destruction and damage, some total and some just partial as in any battle that takes place in and around large populated areas....I would think you're fairly safe with your idea...but that's only my opinion. I like it. ;)

All the best...Roy.

Hi Dave,

As it happens, yesterday I watched "Kingdom of heaven" on DVD. Seeing your base I immedeately saw a resemblance with one of the scene at the end of the movie were the crusaders are defending the demolished walls of Jerusalem. Now there was a pile of ruble caused by dozens of ballistae and trebuchets of the Saracens. Of course there is a trend to exaggerate demolition in movies but I think that days of bombardmend could cause serious damage on medieval walls. So, as Roy already stated I think you're not far from the truth with this. Keep on going with it, I should say. Good luck ;) !

Dave,
I have to echo the others oppinions! I think you have a great fit, and the base does an excellent job of exagerating/enhancing the figures verticality. I also like the size, not too small or too big. As Gary so eloquently put it, "GO FOR IT!"

Good to see someone wondering this Dave - all too often we see inappropriate groundwork in historical subjects (ruined columns in a Greek or Roman setting that look just like they do today, or heavily-weathered crosses or standing stones when they would have been centuries newer at the time of the subject!) (y)

One thing I would suggest depicting ruined masonry, try to depict dressed surfaces on some of the blocks so that they look like they're from a finished wall, it's a nice touch. And don't forget some mortar would still be clinging to some of the faces.

In the 16th of August 1153 the Christians attacked the Askalon. The Templars with their motto "the first in attack the last in retreat", had standed in the first chain. The defenders of the stronghold flamed enemy siege tower. But the wind moved the flames into the city. Moreover the wall broke. There was a one big breach. That is why the 40 Templars got to the stronghold. Their chief was named Bernard from Tremelay. The small troops of Templars had a problem to hold a positions and to defend the heavy siege road for another knights. Separated from the rest of the army they were in the trap: the 40 of warriors had gone. for the second time in one year the Templars lost their grandmaster. The Askalon fall the six days after.
So the ruins which you are building might be ruins of Askalon.
Crusades are my biggest pasion, I read some books about them ;)

Best regards

Hey there,

Great minds think alike! Just finished this fig a couple of days ago and I'm completely gobsmacked at the fact that a place like this exists, which allows for so much sharing..

Hope you have a wonderful experience with this one and i look forward to seeing your progress!

The base looks great so far, fits in beautifully with a siege scenario in my opinion. Did you build it up from the one which was included in the kit or was this entirely composed of your own deadly recipe?

Cheers!
