All I can say is it's ABOUT DAMN TIME! OK maybe KICK-BUTT! Thank you Pegaso for doing a Maori bust!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm VERY excited about this one. The possibilities with the facial tattoos is endless and I think it's high time we finaly have a decent representation of this largely over-looked subject. Sign me up for sure!

Simply amazing stuff for another month for Pegaso. This 75mm mounted hussar just begs to get started and painted. Lovely releases for a warm November.

Agreed - about time!

I'm a little worried about the moko though, if it's sculpted you can't really do your own version; well, not easily. If the lines are not sculpted in then it won't be a proper representation (depending on the date this is supposed to be).

Einion,
good point. I guess I went in thinking, "surely it wouldn't be sculpted", but you may be right. I hope not, I would like to research and do the moko of my own choosing. Time will tell. I will certainly pick one of these up regardless though.

Hi Jay and Einion,

Had to chime in on this one, fantastic news to see the Maori bust and you couldn't ask for a more competent bust scuptor than Michael Saez to do this one. He is gifted at capturing ethic characteristics and has done a superb job here.

Unfortunately the same can't be said for Massimo's painting, it is beautiful brushwork and skin tone is spot on however the "Moko" is totally fictional and I doubt based on an actual example. These are unique to each individual and I'd recommend that you check out some of the online resources for better examples. These are typically more tightly detailed, with swirls being particularly prevalent, have a look here for some ideas:

And some contemporary examples which are based on traditional patterns:

Massimo has got the colouring correct though, these are only done in green tones - usually dark green almost black.

Also would recommend painting the "tiki" - small pendant on the chest and the hair comb in greenstone i.e. jade, which these are more commonly made of. The hair comb can be done in bone as well and the tiki could have "paua eyes" this is an iridescent shell similar to abalone.

Hope that helps and thanks to the Pegaso team for recognising this overlooked subject area.

Kind regards to all,

Mike

Mike,
nice work, thanks for the references. I really like the fact that the pendant can be painted as jade, will add a nice touch of contasting color to the warm dark skin tones. I'm REALLY excited about this one! Glad to see others are too. Can't wait to see others interpretations!
